Suunto 9 Baro crashes / restarts at the beginning of a training
-
@cosme-costa This release was a ‘Spring’ release which arrived in mid/late Autumn. The previous one had significantly annoying bugs too eg: haphazard temp logging for swimming, as well as the occasional black screen, albeit not as frequent as this one. It took 8 months to get those fixed.
Funnily enough I’m considering downgrading the firmware - not sure how safe that is though so would appreciate feedback on that. Then again, I don’t remember when was the last time the watch just worked without issues! It’s a question of choosing the least worst I guess!
-
@cosme-costa I agree with you the S9 has and still is (when functioning smoothly) a great watch. I run long ultras, and when I bought this watch it was at the top end of battery length on full GPS. Over the last couple of years other watch companies have progressed so quickly. In terms of battery life the 9 peak is now pretty much redundant, hence its price reduction, but even the new 9 peak pro doesn’t come near matching a watch like the apex 2 pro.
Anyhow that’s drifting off a little. The S9 has been around a while now, and it certainly feels like it’s creaking under the bonnet, and this random crashing at the start of activities feels like proof that the hardware can’t really support the software anymore. Hopefully they can release something quickly to delay a new purchase!

With all systems the apex 2 pro has 45 hours battery life, the 9pp 40 hours (while having a similar size as the apex 2, which has 30 hours).
Yes, coros has some features the 9pp doesn’t have. But battery of the 9pp is very good compared to similar sized watches.
-
@el2thek which is very funny to me, since coros is talking so much about how Killian Jornet has chosen the apex 2 pro because it is light yet has a lot of battery and features. But by this logic he’d be better off with suunto 9pp.
-
@el2thek the apex 2 pro is 75hrs on full battery gps - and has maps.
-
@Geoffwilli And 1.3" screen…
-
@Geoffwilli well, s9pp has 70h on all satellites with 1s sampling but some smart less precise algo which however still gives comparable results to 1 sat.
-
@Geoffwilli meanwhile unfortunately had to do it: Coros Apex 2 Pro is my main watch since 2 months. Before I had S9B for years and S9PP. S9PP could unfortunately not convince me (noisy vibrations + HR bad for me), so I sent it back. After 2nd crash with S9B I looked for alternatives. Happy with Coros. Also very accurate. HR very good… good app. Advanced evolab metrics, which for me provide a little more information. Maps is in some cases useful. Spotify maybe likley coming. Overall modern lightweight, robust, reliable watch. Excellent and modern feel and wrist strap.

Where did you find that? Personally wouldn’t use a watch to listen to music, but some streaming integration would probably make plent of people switch. Even from Garmin.
-
@el2thek just youtubers guessing and a certain feeling
Also not so important for me, only nice feature. Want a robust, reliable, accurate watch.

Just had two more instances of the watch crashing.
That’s two this morning.
During the same run.
That makes it 3 crashes in 2 days. It has crashed 3 out 5 times I used it to log an exercise.
That is unexpectable.
Anything short of a fix in the next two weeks is an absolute mockery of the customer base.
Meanwhile I have not even seen an official acknowledgement of the issue by Suunto; just some hear-say that they are looking at it.
I am so tired of having to deal with this sort of second-rate SW quality with every ‘upgrade’. What a pile of manure.
-
@ADHDMonkey I haven’t had any crashed myself (yet). Did you use any SuuntoPlus or anything? Will see for my run later if it causes a crash.
-
@el2thek No just a bog-standard log. No additional features or custom logging. Try syncing to your phone immediately before the run (like within 5 mins) or so, because that the only thing I can think of that I did " differently", maybe some cache is getting overloaded.
-
@ADHDMonkey I know is not ideal but did you reset the watch to factory settings?
-
@ADHDMonkey Do you have many activities or guides stored in the watch?
Before a factory reset I’ll try to delete all the old activities in the watch and Guides not used, perhaps it could free memory. To take into account: software update was before december but SuuntoApp is adding new S+ features, I don’t know if those new features can “overload” S9B platform.
-
@Bulkan Not yet, as I feel it could perhaps be kind of risky (?) and others on this forum have said they saw minimal or no improvement after a factory reset.
That said, after this morning’s experience I might have to give that a go.
-
@jjpaz I don’t use guides at all (or any S+ features for that matter!), but I do have a load of activities on the watch (which to be honest I never even refer back to as I just use the app for that) so that might be something. I’ll try that before the factory reset. Thanks.
-
@ADHDMonkey Give it a go.
-
@Geoffwilli the Coros Apex 2 pro has 45 hours of battery life in all systems, and the S9PP 40 hours in all systems. The mode in which achieves 75 hours is GPS only, and the S9PP achieves 70 hours in endurance mode.

@isazi DCR is not happy with the gps accuracy of Apex2Pro for the price range:
