Suunto 9 Baro crashes / restarts at the beginning of a training

@DMytro Ha! Tell that to Spartan owners.
There’s no point in new ‘features’ (mostly gimmicks if we’re brutally honest) if there are fundamental bugs like this, and the ‘fixes’ take half a year to materialise.
-
As said in another topic, Suunto is aware of the issue, not sure about how widespread it is as I have never had a crash, but it has been escalated few weeks ago, and all your logs have been forwarded and brought to the attention of the developers.
I asked for more information that I can share, I will share them if and when I receive an answer.I’m sorry to hear about watches crashing, I would be pissed if it was my watch, but please make yourself heard without speculations about how and how not the software development process work inside Suunto.
-
@DMytro Mine hasn’t crashed/restarted yet. Not with normal use or with structured intervals (I use structured intervals more or less every two weeks on average, so I’m not a heavy user).
I wonder if all this crashes are with some Suunto guides screen or custom sport, things that previously have given issues. As @isazi says Suunto is aware of the issue so I’m pretty sure they will take care of it.
-
@cosme-costa I use suunto guides all the time and my watch didn’t crash either.
But I don’t use navigation and related metrics (ETA, ETE, …) and I don’t use S+. -
mine crashed twice in last two months. in both cases it was basic cross-country skiing mode without any guides nor sport apps. I was doing lot of custom backcountry and indoor cycling and it haven’t crashed.
-
@cosme-costa Mine is on the other side. I mainly use the default settings that come with the watch, sometimes with intervals and/or distance target, but nothing fancy. My watch crashed quite regularly until about three weeks ago.
-
@chargerunner Hard reset has been done so will see if that helps, but from reading on here its not really a solution! After being faithful to Suunto for many years a several watches I can hear Coros calling my name!
-
@cosme-costa Let’s hope it doesn’t take 8 months again… This one almost makes the missed metrics in the previous update look like a slight oversight!
@isazi As an aside, perhaps this information might help: Mine always crashed with default bog-standard use (no apps, or special features enabled by me, and no custom settings). Seems more likely to happen when the activity involved GPS. My hunch would be that there is some background processes, or some changes in data /comms protocol(s) causing the processor/RAM to crap-out and restart itself. But that’s obviously a very hazard guess.
-
@Geoffwilli I’m on the same boat. I’ve had Suunto products for ever (diving equipment, compasses etc). I’m not sure there will be others in the future, not with this sort of thing happening time and again and the kind of alternatives coming to the market, the Coros offerings being very strong contenders.
Shame really; the S9 is a very solid platform in my humble opinion, and aside from these very irritating let-downs it could be a great watch. If I had any say I would take a step back and give a ‘minimalist’ option for those of us who value reliability over ‘gimmicks’. even better would be to give users a bit more freedom - Similar to what Garmin does with the open source stuff. I bet there would be way better face options - to mention just one example - if that was the case.
-
@ADHDMonkey This is strange, because I’m using my S9B 5 to 7 times per week, and only one activity without GPS and I’m not facing restarts or reboots only the “black screen” bug that was solved and returned with this last software (hope will be addressed with a next firmware).
What I have noticed with the new firmware is that if I follow a route I can not go to the navigation screen immediately, I have to wait some long seconds. If I start the activity and immediately start changing screens the watch freezes between two screens 15/20 seconds and then works as usual, only happens at the beginning. If I’m not using navigation I can change screens right away.
@Geoffwilli I think the S9/S9B is and has been a very stable platform, is mature and works as it should. OK, with this last firmware a quite big bug has pop up but it doesn’t mean that Suunto won’t solve it, in fact @isazi has said that not more logs are needed, so I want to believe that they have identified the bug and are working on solving it.
I understand that us as users would like that our issues are treated as preferent and that we are informed nearly in live-timing but this doesn’t happen in Suunto nor in other companies.

@cosme-costa This release was a ‘Spring’ release which arrived in mid/late Autumn. The previous one had significantly annoying bugs too eg: haphazard temp logging for swimming, as well as the occasional black screen, albeit not as frequent as this one. It took 8 months to get those fixed.
Funnily enough I’m considering downgrading the firmware - not sure how safe that is though so would appreciate feedback on that. Then again, I don’t remember when was the last time the watch just worked without issues! It’s a question of choosing the least worst I guess!
-
@cosme-costa I agree with you the S9 has and still is (when functioning smoothly) a great watch. I run long ultras, and when I bought this watch it was at the top end of battery length on full GPS. Over the last couple of years other watch companies have progressed so quickly. In terms of battery life the 9 peak is now pretty much redundant, hence its price reduction, but even the new 9 peak pro doesn’t come near matching a watch like the apex 2 pro.
Anyhow that’s drifting off a little. The S9 has been around a while now, and it certainly feels like it’s creaking under the bonnet, and this random crashing at the start of activities feels like proof that the hardware can’t really support the software anymore. Hopefully they can release something quickly to delay a new purchase!

With all systems the apex 2 pro has 45 hours battery life, the 9pp 40 hours (while having a similar size as the apex 2, which has 30 hours).
Yes, coros has some features the 9pp doesn’t have. But battery of the 9pp is very good compared to similar sized watches.
-
@el2thek which is very funny to me, since coros is talking so much about how Killian Jornet has chosen the apex 2 pro because it is light yet has a lot of battery and features. But by this logic he’d be better off with suunto 9pp.
-
@el2thek the apex 2 pro is 75hrs on full battery gps - and has maps.
-
@Geoffwilli And 1.3" screen…
-
@Geoffwilli well, s9pp has 70h on all satellites with 1s sampling but some smart less precise algo which however still gives comparable results to 1 sat.
-
@Geoffwilli meanwhile unfortunately had to do it: Coros Apex 2 Pro is my main watch since 2 months. Before I had S9B for years and S9PP. S9PP could unfortunately not convince me (noisy vibrations + HR bad for me), so I sent it back. After 2nd crash with S9B I looked for alternatives. Happy with Coros. Also very accurate. HR very good… good app. Advanced evolab metrics, which for me provide a little more information. Maps is in some cases useful. Spotify maybe likley coming. Overall modern lightweight, robust, reliable watch. Excellent and modern feel and wrist strap.

Where did you find that? Personally wouldn’t use a watch to listen to music, but some streaming integration would probably make plent of people switch. Even from Garmin.
-
@el2thek just youtubers guessing and a certain feeling
Also not so important for me, only nice feature. Want a robust, reliable, accurate watch.
