So, before yall jump on me for this, hear me out.

When I left Garmin I was using the latest and greatest 965. I had primarily used the MIP higher end Forerunners and Fenix series.

So, when I moved to AMOLED, it never really felt right for MY usage case. I love having my display alway on, and though I could do that with the AMOLED, I always had a tiny beacon of light emitting from my wrist. Something about that bugged me.

So, while I’m incredibly happy to see Suunto move forward and innovate, in their own way of course, I’m still loving the Vertical. Now I’m even more optimistic for a future update that may elevate some of the current reported bugs, etc.

I still believe the Vertical has one of the prettiest MIP interfaces / UI’s I’ve ever experienced, even with the lag haha.

Just curious if anyone feels the same? Or, if everyone is about to jump ship 😛 lol

I’m also keeping my Vertical, I tried them side to side for months and, while the Race is beautiful and works well, for me personally the Vertical is still better.

I love my SV, too 😄 It s the watch that fits my needs best because SkiMo is my main buisiness. Or generally outdoor activities. The SV battery lasts longer and with the solar I have som extra capacity. And when getting the update all is fine 😉

I agree that I don t need an amoled display because it s too sharp when you have it on all the time.

@twekkel mainly battery life. I don’t do 80 hours activities, I’m a puny mortal, but the Vertical gives me back to back days with 8/12 hours activities without worrying for the battery. In the past 40 days I only charged it once, and true I’m injured and don’t train every day, but I’m liking not having to charge the battery every week so much, especially given that this comes at no accuracy loss.

And I already bought the Vertical in May, cannot afford another watch for few years 😁

Definietly keeping the Vertical! It’s the perfect watch for my uses.

I have somewhat sensitive eyes and don’t feel an AMOLED device would suit me long-term. I had a Samsung Gear watch a few years back that was “Super AMOLED,” and it was downright distracting at night, in a movie theater, at dinner, etc. It wasn’t generally comfortable for me to look at.

I think many people suffer of a kind of FOMO. Always wanting to have the newest, even if the newest isn’t the best. No doubt that the Race is pretty good, but it fits not everybody.

@Andrew_ I tested both the Vertical and the Race in a 100 mile race that was 2 weeks ago.

I think the race is ideal for me for training and racing. But, I do some longer distance fun that will encompass a few days. For those I would use the Vertical. So, I don’t think you can go wrong here, the Race price is excellent and I found the screen very helpful during my race.

I am keeping the Vertical as I cannot afford a new watch every 6 months.

Also the price for a used Vertical has now fallen significantly and I don’t belive I would get more than 250€ for it and that is 40% of what I paid 5 months ago.

But I would love to have the Amoled, but that is not a deal breaker for me.

What bums me is if Vertical will have less functionality than the Race as seen in the spreadsheet from DC Rainmaker. Because that could mean that in the future Vertical will not be as supported as the Race and will get the updates later with fewer functionalities.

@Brad_Olwin I know you’ve said in the past that you were even partial to the 9PP over the Vertical in some instances, so where does the Race fit in with your broader use-case heirarchy and is the 9PP still relevant for your situations?

I am not only keeping my Vertical, but even after today’s news and hype I would still choose Vertical over Race if I was buying a watch today.

The exclusive features just don’t appeal to me, but I am THRILLED about the amount of our wishes getting delivered to both Vertical and Race!!! It pays off to be a member of this forum.

Anyway, it is great to have alternatives for different kinds of consumers! Go Suunto!

@Ketoohs I just watched DC Rainmakers video, and he did say that the Vertical should get all of the features of the Race. From experience with Garmin, this is fairly standard as long as the hardware has the capability. Ive always just thought that to boost sales of the newest and greatest device initially companies dont do the sofware update for previous models right away, then once the hype dies down port the updates to the previous capable models. That way, they can get a bunch of, in this case, Vertical owners having FOMO and buy the new Race. 🙂 Just my opinion though. Im in the same boat with a Vertical and cant afford another watch 6 months after buying it,. I think Ill hold on to the likely last Suunto device made in Finland. Hoping for new updates come soon which will refresh the Vertical enough to get over the FOMO.

@Brad_Olwin Question: Im likely in the same boat as you on screen eyesight, and I bumped up to the Vertical for the larger display and fonts. Im assuming its much easier to read the Race screen vs the Vertical screen?

I have to admit, that I most certainly hope (AKA - I ABSOLUTELY EXPECT), that the - still new - Vertical will still be developed and receive significant updates. The update policy of Suunto (demonstrated on the 9) was and is the most important reason why I am still with Suunto.
Although I love the app and the UI (not so much currently with the rather bugged or at least inconsistent Vertical UI), I nevertheless miss not too few features. Without updates the current balance might no longer be balanced .

@BrunoH very happy with the updates coming to Vertical. Bit of a long silence from Suunto but looks like a very substantial update.

Keep in mind, that the price of the Race is only so excellent, because it is manufactured in China.

Keep also in mind, what’s happend with the Suunto 7’s AMOLED display after some years.

                                        TL;DR: I’ll keep my Vertical.

this is not a question. of course keep Vertical.
Vertical is more suitable for hardcore adventurer and explorer and also as a survival tool.
Race is more like suitable for runner because of the weight and doesn’t need super long battery life.
