Vertical as an every day watch

(S9B is da beast. I think specs quote it anywhere from 51 to 53 mm in diameter and 16-17 mm in thickness, it’s really closer to diving watches than running ones.)
The diameter of the S9B is 50mm, the main competitor that I can think of that’s larger is the Garmin Enduro which is 51mm
-
@MiniForklift You forget Fenix 7X. And which S9B? The design went through a number of iterations since the official launch in 2018. The watch did slim down a bit but I doubt my S9B Titanium from 2018 os smaller than 51-52 mm.

There could be more on the Garmin side of things, I’m not familiar with the Fenix range as there’s too many variations and they confuse the hell out of me. Yeah my S9B is from 2018 as well (the gold version that came with a leather strap)
I didn’t know there were larger sizes than 50mm so you may be right, I have only ever seen 50mm described on Suunto’s web pages and as their official specs for the S9 Baro
-
@MiniForklift Nice drawings! But what is it your signature saying about reality? I had to find an old engineering caliper and pull my S9B from an honorary retirement into The Drawer, but here you go! Pardon for freedom units:
So, here we have 2.025” (as in inch), which should come to about 51.5 mm (51.435 mm if we are being really fastidious).
-
@NickK Well, if this gonna be that kind of party
I got 50.5 mm here (so yeah, still larger than the 50 from official specs) >>>
I bought mine in 2021 direct from Suunto.com.

That drawing was taken straight from the Suunto NZ site, it’s on the page for the S9B Titanium Limited Edition…
However interestingly I have just found out that the S9 Titanium was possibly made as a 51.5mm model…
No idea why but that would explain the size of the one that you have

I bought mine from Suunto in 2018, and as you can see the styling of yours is quite a bit different. Kind of more streamlined.

Possibly? You are attaching the very measurements that say 51.5 mm diameter and a whopping 17 mm thickness. And didn’t I show you the picture of a measurement done here and now on the actual Suunto 9 Baro Titanium from 2018? I haven’t even removed any EXIF data from the image, because I’m that honest

Because back in 2018, the diameter of 51-52 mm wasn’t uncommon. Fenix 3 and Fenix 3 HR were exact same size. Ditto for thickness. 15-16 mm was considered perfectly normal. In fact, Fenix 3 had just 1.2" screen inside all that bulk.

@NickK gotta admit, I love my “beast” watch.

Same! I’ve bought quite a few watches from most of the competitor brands but have always come back to my trusty S9B. But having said that I literally can’t wait to get my hands on the Vertical

@MiniForklift
@NickK
@TrailEyes
you guys are awesome 🥳 …when I read about sizes, I thought that the X-Alps design might have the largest body of them all and wanted to pull out my metric nonius caliper that is always at hand on my homeoffice desk, but you already did thatfor me the Vertical is the new beast! body to screen ratio is great
-
@Tieutieu retail shops have it in stock already, but they can’t sell it before Tuesday. I have one reserved and can pick it up Monday end of day.

Yep, I attached the screenshot pic of the S9B Titanium’s measurements because I had assumed all S9 Baro’s were the same size - which they’re clearly not. So I’ve learnt something new for today

@mikekoski490 many thx for your link.
now i found it were i may retrieve it… -
I’ve always been a mechanical watch guy, have a few nice pieces now and generally my Suunto is reserved for just training and racing. Will be interesting to see if that changes when the Vertical turns arrives in my mailbox
-
Juste received my vertical yesterday.
I was already wearing my S9b h24…
guess what ?! It’s not gonna change with the Vertical.
Even it is 5g heavier than my sb9 titanium, it is not noticeable and it is/it feels really less bulkier ont the wrist.
Good job ! -
-
beefy is beautiful I have small wrists and pretty fine with the dimensions of the S9B. If the Vertical has nearly the same dimensions it works very well as everyday watch. Often it is just a question og getting used to something and I now wouldn’t go back to a smaller watch.
-
Hello everyone,
I just received mine and love it. It is slightly larger than my Garmin Epix 2 (which I never liked but has a better screen than the Baro which I could no more read while running)
The watch is perfectly fine for my medium/small wrist and the screen is a lot clearer to read making it a perfect match for my needs and aesthetics.
But other than the watch’s physical characteristics I’d like to add a couple more things to the everyday watch comments.
- it would be nice to have more than one alarm
- some type of adjustment for the backlight during sleep hours. The whole room lights up every time I move my hand which can be annoying. Maybe a setting for not activating the backlight while in do not disturb mode would be nice. If you want to check the time during the night press any button to activate.
- notifications, it would be nice to separate calls and msgs, while on watch mode or activity. Like the garmin does.
- quicker access to the flashlight by double clicking.
I know some of these features have been mentioned before but id like to bring them to your attention once again.
thank you.
-
@nassoscal have you updated the firmware to .48? It should not light up the backlight when raising your wrist in DND mode. Pls confirm and maybe share your backlight settings and FW version.
Thx! -
@nassoscal How does it feel on the wrist compared to Epix? I am considering the same switch.
