Software update 2.39.20 (2024 Q4)

@Mattg576 ahh, cool. Did it self-calibrate after moving around a bit?
-
Impressed by the update on my 9PP: smoothness and feeling of depth in the menu carousel (by making use of smaller fonts) is great.
-
@TrailEyes I did 5 soft resets and one regular ‘Power Off’ cycle and that didn’t help. In the end I changed my interface language to English and that finally seems to have helped. Back to Polish now and it’s still OK.

Improved outdoor distance accuracy
Any chance this could be elaborated on? Distance accuracy is what keeps the Vertical on my wrist over other brands. However, I’ve always felt that Suunto watches measure just a touch longer than reality in certain scenarios (heavy tree coverage, for example). Suunto is the only brand where the activity distance is sometimes longer than the measured GNSS distance.
Anyway, excited to test this out. Guess I’ll be running with multiple watches again for a while.

@duffman19 the GNSS firmware has quite a number of operating modes (like driving, swimming, static, moving etc).
Plus there are the dual/single band, energy saving modes.
In all those modes the individual position points are calculated into trajectories, that the watch uses to calculate the distance.
Both positioning itself and the distance calculated plus other things like time to first fix under certain conditions have been improved.
More detail would not really be helpful.Just my 2c to over/under estimating:
Whenever I use the “follow route” function in my watch I get a distance that is slightly longer than the usual distance on the same route without this. So my conclusion is, that every GPS measurement is under-estimating - the current Suunto’s just least so -
Can you believe it: the watch remembers the navigation setting again! Hurrah!

great job guys! can’t wait to update it and test if all the problems are solved. thank you so much and happy holidays
-
Great job! I love the new menu, it even seems a bit snappier on my Vertical?
P.S. Don’t want to take anything from the awesome job the suunto devs did, but I hope we see some interval/structured workout improvements in some future release e.g. counter of current interval repetition.
-
@Egika Thanks for the reply and explanation. That’s about what I expected as far as improvements (generally improved distance calculation algos).

Yep, that’s my experience as well. When I look at other brands, it seems they over-apply distance smoothing and overuse additional metrics such as cadence and pace resulting in under-estimated distances. I’ve always viewed Suunto’s results as the most “raw” of the bunch, and usually the most accurate. The only issue I have with Suunto’s approach is that significant GNSS errors or offsets (which I still see occasionally) often result in a matched distance offset.
At any rate, it’s exciting that Suunto is working to improve their already excellent accuracy.

Some internal changes to improve accuracy, no specific details to share.

@pavel-samokha news about contour lines on the Maps above 500m zoomlevel!?
-
holiday watch faces should be available now in the app
-
@pavel-samokha
Maybe I’ve found a strange “temporary” bug.
Checking new watch faces in the app (detail view) while the “watch is syncing” grey floating label was showing, reset the watch one to the Vertical default, not the one I was using (classic analog). It happened a couple of times, now I can’t reproduce it anymore
-
On the Suunto Race S. When you go to the logbook on the watch, the activities don’t show any graphs. It will be interesting if anyone else has noticed this.

Mine also reverted to the default. I closed the app and resync’d everything and finally got the new faces (and my previously loaded) to flow back thru
-
@Egika Rocking a Christmas watchface on my 9PP. Starting to think I need a Race for more vibrant colours though
-
@dazzlerdc it’s default behavior after update, workout data is reset, only basic header data is left on the watch
-
@wakarimasen Exactly, Some wallpapers looks like made for Amoled only :D. I’ll stick with Vertical few more years, but next one will be Amoled, no need such a powerfull battery and MIP. In few years amoled with battery should be much extended.
-
Christmas tree watchface is what I needed for the holidays, not only for the festive graphics but also for not observing the declining of fitness via the watch face complication
