uncomplete track during activity
-
@ortles not a solution but for backup purpose i always plan and draw a route in SA and sync to my watch first before i go to mountains for hiking.
at least if red line disappeared i still have blue line as a guidance.
-
@ortles The only solution is that suunto fix it and do this fast! The race is out since October 2023. The Vertical since may 2023. Enough time to fix this issue. Would be sad to change to garmin one year after Vertical release cause suunto didnt get solved some known Bugsā¦ Hope they fix it fast

Hey guys, thanks for your answers - this is defenitely something, suunto should work on! I mean, the vertical is meant to be the top outdoor watch, it costs 500-600 Euro, and thereās no reliable track back function??
In case of emergency, if thereās no sight, this is one if the most important features!
I have been in a white out on glacier twice with really no sight and no traces ā> with the 10 year old (!) ambit peak 3, I could choose the ātrack backā option and found my way back safely, no problem.
The vertical does not have an explicit track back option. Why?? The red line could serve as a track back, but until now, is not reliable. Should be fixed, definitely.
The blue line you have uploaded in advance is not always enough, e. g. if there are hidden crevasses on a glacier and you need the exact way around, to find your way back safely.
Another feature i am missing is the option to choose one of the recorded tracks of your last activities as a track in the navigation menue. With my old ambit peak 3, no problem. With the vertical, this is not possible (only via the app, which, in certain situations outside, is not very convenient).
In general, the vertical is a good watch, but with this, i am very disappointed. Not having a reliable option to track back is definitely a reason to switch to garmin. I mean, the ten year old ambit peak 3 can do this, but the brand new, top notch vertical has no option for that? Really??
I hope, suunto will fix this!!
Greets, ortles

@ortles i think Suunto had a trackback Funktion in Board. Where is the difference between a function called ātrack Backā and follow your recorded track Back on Display? You can zoom in the maps in your watch and go the route back to your Startpoint. Am i wrong? Is this not a track back Option for you?

Why this is not reliable? Your recorded track is with Multiband very good to come safe Back at home, Go your route easy Back!? Otherwise you could stop follow your track, and start the track again without stoping your GPS record. Then you didnt have the red line only your blue Lineā¦and you can track Back to your Startpoint
-
@GiPFELKiND it is not reliable, if there is a chance that the beginning of the track is not shown in the watchā¦
-
@Egika ah you are right. This part i read to fast. Sorry if the first part from the track is missing
-
You are right - the red ābreadcrumbā track would be an appriopriate ātrack backā option! If this would be reliable, everything would be totally fine.
The problem is just that, for some reasons, the first part of the track is oftentimes missing when going down again. I noticed this three or four times until now when ski touring (the activities were about 3-6 hours long each).
I was wondering, if I was the only one with this problem, but this seems to be a common thing.
If I look at the track in the app afterwards, the recorded track non the less is complete.
So I think this is a software bug concerning the ābreadcrumbā function that should be fixed!
-
@ortles correct. I reported this bug into Suuntoās bug tracking system quite a while ago.
So this will be prioritised there. -
@ortles I had this happen as well. Suunto knows about the bug and will fix but we do not know when.
-
@Brad_Olwin @Egika Thanks for the update!
That sounds like good news, if they will fix it, everything should be fine - hope this will come with the next update!

I also have this problem on my Suunto Vertical, Iāve reported it more than a month ago here https://forum.suunto.com/topic/10264/initial-part-of-previous-track-disappears-on-watch but nothing has happened since. IMHO this is totally unacceptable because itās absolutely a safety-relevant bug.
-
@wesk2a I hear you! Happened to me this weekend during SkiMo as well. I needed to see the right trail back to my car. Suunto knows this is a bug.

I absolutely agree with you! Itās not a ānice to haveā but a safety-relevant issue.
Here they are discussing about the suunto update policy:
https://forum.suunto.com/topic/10338/unfortunately-time-to-go-back-to-garmin/123
I agree that for some features itās not necesssary to offer updates every three to four weeks. But if the issue is relevant for safety, they should be quicker IMHO.
My old ambit peak 3 had no problems with that, so I was surprised that the new vertical, which is supposed to be used in an alpine environment, does not offer a reliable track back option.
Hope they will fix this better sooner than laterā¦

@skitouring
Do you know if it has been fixed on new update? -
@peegee
It seems not

https://forum.suunto.com/post/141156This is very disappointing!
They are working on new watch faces and other lifestyle features (wowā¦), but are unable to fix such a bug which concerns one of the basic functions and is obviously relevant for safety.
What a weak performance from suunto.
Are they really in the outdoor business and are they using their own products? I guess notā¦

@ortles
obviously not a walk in the park to fix this issue. -
@ortles I agree, this is something that needs to be fixed, we have reported it a while ago and also inquired recently (when getting closer to release) to know if it was fixed or not.
Unfortunately, I think this requires some work that affects the inner workings of how the activity is recorded, in fact remember that only recently the watches with large memory got the capacity to record long (hundred hours) activities, so I hope to see this fixed in the Q2 release (if it comes, the future is not for us to know).
