Feature Suggestion: download maps when not connected to charger.
-
@isazi You are great - we will patiently wait for the update
-
@Danny-poleg
And ultra runners -
With recent map updates, my SV was on charger a long time for map downloading, and during this download, the battery gauge didn’t change : no charge.
Is it normal, and designed like this? -
@Mff73 This sounds crazy to me, because my SV is charging and downloading maps at the same time… but charging was much faster than downloading last time when I was updating the maps of Germany…
-
@Rokelly Not a good idea as running out of power while downloading would be bad.
-
@isazi How to download the map on the Race in WiFi? The app only works in conjunction with the charger.
-
@laufbursche7
it’s not possible to download without the charger. it was requested to make this possible, but some maps are very big and transferring time is long -
and WiFi is energy hungry
-
@freeheeler thanks for answering.
I thought there was another option because I didn’t take my charger with me to Denmark. I ran without topography yesterday. I didn’t get lost.
-
@freeheeler I ran the new route without topography in Denmark and found back.
-
@laufbursche7 …aaaand everyone can see that Denmark is pretty flat, so you don’t really need to worry about the contour lines
-
@BrunoH Denmark is flat, that’s not the topic. I run 3 times a week in mountainous regions. It’s about not knowing the surroundings and it would have been nice if I had all the paths on the Route on my watch.

Is it normal, and designed like this?Same issue today .
Watch battery was 15%, plugged on the charger to charge and download maps.
Maps were downloaded but watch is still 15%.
Is it worth sending logs? -

You are probably getting a new firmware next week
-
@isazi
Is it a known issue which will be fixed with this new FW? -
@Mff73 I don’t recall this being known, but firmware is basically release candidate state, so if it happens with the new firmware it makes sense reporting it.
-
But back to the original feature request - this is still a valid point. Why not allow to download without a charger, but with a battery requirement of e.g. 50% or 30%? If during the process the battery gets lower, the operation could be paused, just like currently it is when the watch is disconnected from charging.
-
@kriskus Same answer as before. Some of the maps are very large, a charger is required. If maps are improved with place names, etc they will have more data. Part of this might be future proofing. I do not know, just speculating.
-
I didn’t know about this requirement when I bought the Vertical and I had that situation. Luckily I had the charging cable with me, and I was able to download a map connecting the watch to my car and sharing wifi with my phone.
I am sure the algorythm can be improved. This is a watch with a (very) long lasting battery, so a map download should not be a problem if you have more than i.e, let’s say a 30% battery. And even when you download a file, the algorythm can checksum the downloaded file before installing it (which is probably already doing it). So not using the charger should not be an issue at all.
But at the end, I don’t think this is an issue at all. To be fair, how many times are we downloading or updating a map? Once or twice a year? As my understanding, it should be better to use the development resources in fixing real and important things when possible.

I really hope too that speed of downloading will be fix soon, and also the capacity to download maps without wifi.
