The Race is nice, but I’m still holding on to my Vertical

@Patrick-Löffler-0
the Race is a bit lighter and it feels slightly more comfortable for me.
I’m wearing the Vertical 24/7 -
@freeheeler Thanks. May I please ask why you prefer the Vertical even the Race is more comfortable to you?

I’m wearing the Vertical 24/7Take a velcro strap and you will check several times a day whether the watch is still on your wrist … I never had a better feeling with a watch.

@Patrick-Löffler-0
yes, I wear the Vertical because it is my own
the others aren’t and I wear them alternating for sports or specific reasons only -
First official rebate on suunto’s website on the SV, for Black Friday.
-100€ on French store. -
because it is manufactured in China.
This is stereotype. iPhone is manufactured in China, what is the problem? -
@freeheeler I took the Race off for a few weeks and switched between Epix Pro 51mm and 965. Took the Race out of the drawer and the wow factor hit again. I don’t see it as plasticky or having a less premium feel than the Vertical like I did a few weeks ago.
-
@Kai-Liu let’s clear this up a bit - iPhones are indeed manufactured in China and India but for an American listed company that is audited and financials and other information disclosed, has a transparent sustainability track. On the other hand, you have Suunto which is now a Chinese company and in the case of Race also made in China. Can one say anything about financials, sustainability about the parent owner? Any independent audits of where the Race is made? Fair wages, no child labour, no oppressive labour practices, etc, any info on these?

@altcmd agree, the point of debate not so much being the quality outcome of the product (which I’m sure can be equally excellent) but the philosophy and what a company stands for. If Suunto is all about Finnish heritage then I would not buy a core product that’s explicitly made somewhere else, provided that they still have local manufacturing. That’s why I’m not getting the Race, no matter how appealing its overall package. Of course you can say that even the Made in Finland Vertical most certainly has outsourced components, but that’s not the point.
-
@Jonathan-C agreed. In similar vein, we spoke about the questionable tactics of Suunto around sustainability here: https://forum.suunto.com/topic/8157/sustainability-at-suunto/38

Finally !..
Finally I was able to see, touch and use a bit the Suunto Race of a friend (steel black)…The screen is brilliant, that’s the point. It also seemed to be a bit more responsive than my SV (but it was a very short time test).
But I must say I definitively prefer my SV titanium. It looks just better to me (color, size/shape even they’re close), and I’m very much confident about button upon crown.
Let’s bet the futur will be awesome considering SR and SV are already top of the line !
-
@Tieutieu
my son wished a new watch for his birthday and he decided to choose the Vertical Titanium over the Race Titanium.
he’s now happy to the moon and back -
@freeheeler I’m sure he’s already planning activities to do with his new Vertical. Nice birthday present to get!
-
@freeheeler Good Dad! Own Vertical since autumn and iam happy.

You are making a lot of assumptions probably learnt from western media. Go there and see yourself instead.
Fair wages – every country living expense is not the same, you can’t compare it dollar to dollar.
child labour – do you believe that child can make Suunto watch? Besides the talent issue, there are too much labour looking for job in China that you don’t need child to work
oppressive labour practices – are you talking about working overtime? Don’t use Instagram then, meta is well known of working overtime. -
Just as a general note, let’s not start some kind of cultural clash here, please
-
@sartoric The only clash among people should be:
- we get lager!
- no, we get wheat beer!
and then the resolution: - ok lets get them both!!
-
I am still owning a Garmin, but I also like Vertical. I wish Suunto watches were able to use ANT+ sensors!

@Kai-Liu comment was about audit. And an independent audit clarifies it, not what media has to say or not. But so much for independence in C. One can’t even say Winnie the Pooh there 🧸
