The Race is nice, but I’m still holding on to my Vertical

@isazi said in The Race is nice, but I’m still holding on to my Vertical:
@Ketoohs Ray showed that there are some differences in features between Race and Vertical, at least right now, but as far I can see the Vertical is still being developed.
I have to admit, that I most certainly hope (AKA - I ABSOLUTELY EXPECT), that the - still new - Vertical will still be developed and receive significant updates. The update policy of Suunto (demonstrated on the 9) was and is the most important reason why I am still with Suunto.
Although I love the app and the UI (not so much currently with the rather bugged or at least inconsistent Vertical UI), I nevertheless miss not too few features. Without updates the current balance might no longer be balanced . -
i’m wondering if the Vertical is going to have an official price drop
-
@BrunoH very happy with the updates coming to Vertical. Bit of a long silence from Suunto but looks like a very substantial update.
-
Keep in mind, that the price of the Race is only so excellent, because it is manufactured in China.
Keep also in mind, what’s happend with the Suunto 7’s AMOLED display after some years.
TL;DR: I’ll keep my Vertical.
-
this is not a question. of course keep Vertical.
Vertical is more suitable for hardcore adventurer and explorer and also as a survival tool.
Race is more like suitable for runner because of the weight and doesn’t need super long battery life. -
I like my Vertical very much, no need to by a watch at the moment
-
@e6321 exactically, and I find it easier to wait for the update now that I know what to expect!
-
@runomatic hey mate, educate me! What happened to S7 amoled? I got rid of mine pretty early and S7 kinda dropped from my radar.
-
@BrunoH it is a Smartwatch with a battery lasting between 1-2 days running Android WearOS.
Introduced 3 years ago or so, not in the Suunto portfolio anymore. -

Suunto kind of got screwed a bit by WearOS tbh. Was a really cool idea but dependent on a 3rd party OS makes it tough to sustain
-
Definitely keep the Vertical, really love the watch! I would choose Vertical over Race if I was buying a watch today. Solar, battery life… and I prefer MIP over AMOLED…
-
@Egika thank you, I know what S7 was. I had one… The battery lasted hardly 24 hours (brand new) and it was crashing constantly (among other fatal errors).
I was just wondering if the amoled display suffered from some long time problems.

You should not buy a new watche just because there is a new one…
-
@BrunoH yes, quite some users had screen burn issues. Suunto must have replaced a lot of screens…
I rather guess they learned from this screen-wise and don’t want to make this happen again… -

I rather guess they learned from this screen-wise and don’t want to make this happen again…Desfit showed in his review that it was taken into account with the Race, with “pixel shifting” (don’t know how to say that better). The characters displayed would move from time to time, so as not to burn parts of the screen.
-
@taziden correct. Those always on energy saving displays are designed in a way that not always the same pixels are activated.
Plus I am very sure that the display hardware is 3 years improved since Suunto 7 -
Suunto devs are working really hard to make the new firmware (probably expected in Fall 2023, let’s say a Tuesday like in the past?) stable and full of new features, large and small. There’s even still development on the GNSS firmware. The Vertical is definitely not an abandoned watch.
-
So even with Suunto MIP is definitely dead? MIP is the clear winner outdoors AMOLED can’t compare even close imo
-
@ultravox people keep saying this but the vertical was only released 6 months ago.
AMOLED will never get better battery life than MIP. I think it’s here for long run. Just different devices for different people. -

I hope so
