@andré-faria Hi,
In my work I use GPSMAP 25000 scale mapping and even on those handheld gps devices I find it difficult to use, especially where all your given is a grid ref to find. I enter the grid ref and have it as a waypoint but when you need to scroll around the map you really find it limitations (for me at least). I tend to use lithium AA Batteries and so far they are lasting much better in colder weather as opposed to alkaline batteries, but they still do suffer in the cold, and spare batteries are always in the bag.
I always take the paper map 25000 scale so you can work out a route to get to the waypoint, I do like using paper and gpsmap together and can use either on its own to get to where I need to get too but having anything less than Ordinance Survey 25000 scale maps would make my job a lot harder.
I must point out this is for work, and leisure use may differ and basic topo maps may do for folk.
I guess having maps on a watch would be ok but personally if I needed maps then I would probably prefer to use my GPSMAP combined with paper maps.
Phones: I occasionally will reference the satelite view if I have a signal but yeah in the cold battery suffers and Id rather keep the phone in the pocket incase I need to use the voice phone, we use SpotGenx for emergency contact. apologies for the long waffling reply 🙄
Thanks for elaborated answer. Yeah I feel the same regarding phone, to save it in case of need.

@andré-faria I use a twonav trail 2 and an Etrex. I really like these devices, for me is a hobby.
When I go for a hike I like to bring the big gps, the only gps watch with routable maps are the Garmin but the lack of touchscreen is not good in my experience. So I go with an s7 and a big GPS and map. My partner sometimes complains but when we are in the middle of a route and change it due to climate o we have more time these gps are the best option.

Hehe I also had an etrex 30x (big learning curve to be able to deal with it, and a bit of slow!), and got now a gpsmap.
The button layout+POIs+ AA batteries make it a good ally for bikepacking adventures (on the edge series, the 530 has buttons but doesn’t have POIs).
Finally solved the “issue” of having an adapter for gpsmap/etrex to garmin edge mount with this adapter.
Enjoy the trails guys
