The Race is nice, but I’m still holding on to my Vertical
-
@craigeggleton agree on a sub 300$ modell, something like the S5 Peak, perhaps without maps and a smaller screen
-
@craigeggleton I would be very surprised ( and disappointed) if we saw a new vertical so soon.
-
@e6321
it’s an interesting thought by @craigeggleton and taking a glimpse to smartphone companies also a reasonable point, but we don’t know.I wouldn’t be disappointed, because that’s what it is with several technology stuff and there will always be a “better” successor of the previous released product at some point.
we can compare and decide if we need the additional features and functions or not.
I’m still happily using my pixel 4a 5g without feeling left behind.
I’ll do the same with watchesif for me a must have feature will be released, I will evaluate and decide for an update or stay with what I have and be happy, too

@Andrew_ So what I find interesting after living with the Race for a few weeks now is I find myself missing the Vertical. I do like the Race’s amoled screen and the digital crown. This next part is probably psychological but when I look at the Race on my wrist it does not scream quality like the Vertical does. The Vertical is a tank (I mean that in a good way) and it has a look and feel that screams premium. I also believe I have fixed the issue with the Vertical digging into my wrist with swapping over to nylon velcro bands. So where am I going with this??..I just ordered another Vertical Ti to pair with my race. My birthday is next month so what the heck…#ALLINSUUNTO!! My wife is going to kill me!!
-
@craigeggleton can you specify, what exactly makes the difference in appearance for you?
the white little dots around the edge of the bezel?
the straight instead of slightly angled bezel?
the more protruding buttons`Else, I don’t see many differences…
-
@Egika very interesting i found the race with Titanium bezzel in the Titanium colour Like the Vertical Ti would be great match. The Race Ti looks like a plastic watch. The Sandwich look would really great to got an Titanium Version like the Vertical colour.
-
@Egika I think you nailed it. To my eye the color scheme of the charcoal gray with the black middle portion just don’t blend as nicely as the colors on the Vertical. The white dots don’t help and the digital crown (awesome in use) just sticks out too much for my liking. Initially I like the more angled bezel but too the touch the Vertical material feels more premium.
-
@GiPFELKiND But it is not plastic but for some damn reason sure looks plasticy!!! ha!!
-
@craigeggleton understand!
Never had a TI Vertical, just the all black one, so cannot compare. -
@craigeggleton
@Egika
the titanium bezel of Race strongly reminds me visually of the A3PS with its stainless bezel that was more eye catching than the A3P all black.I’ve got both, Vertical and Race in titanium and have a high quality impression of both watches.
the race is even lighter and hence I understand the more tank-ish feel of the Vertical.
in summary I personally expect the Race to withstand the same beating as the Vertical -
@freeheeler You have both! So good! Thinking also of buying a Vertical. I have the Race currently. Is there a difference for you in comfort? Which are you wearing more? Thanks.
-
@Patrick-Löffler-0
the Race is a bit lighter and it feels slightly more comfortable for me.
I’m wearing the Vertical 24/7 -
@freeheeler Thanks. May I please ask why you prefer the Vertical even the Race is more comfortable to you?
-

I’m wearing the Vertical 24/7Take a velcro strap and you will check several times a day whether the watch is still on your wrist … I never had a better feeling with a watch.
-
@Patrick-Löffler-0
yes, I wear the Vertical because it is my own
the others aren’t and I wear them alternating for sports or specific reasons only -
First official rebate on suunto’s website on the SV, for Black Friday.

because it is manufactured in China.
This is stereotype. iPhone is manufactured in China, what is the problem? -
@freeheeler I took the Race off for a few weeks and switched between Epix Pro 51mm and 965. Took the Race out of the drawer and the wow factor hit again. I don’t see it as plasticky or having a less premium feel than the Vertical like I did a few weeks ago.
-
@Kai-Liu let’s clear this up a bit - iPhones are indeed manufactured in China and India but for an American listed company that is audited and financials and other information disclosed, has a transparent sustainability track. On the other hand, you have Suunto which is now a Chinese company and in the case of Race also made in China. Can one say anything about financials, sustainability about the parent owner? Any independent audits of where the Race is made? Fair wages, no child labour, no oppressive labour practices, etc, any info on these?

@altcmd agree, the point of debate not so much being the quality outcome of the product (which I’m sure can be equally excellent) but the philosophy and what a company stands for. If Suunto is all about Finnish heritage then I would not buy a core product that’s explicitly made somewhere else, provided that they still have local manufacturing. That’s why I’m not getting the Race, no matter how appealing its overall package. Of course you can say that even the Made in Finland Vertical most certainly has outsourced components, but that’s not the point.
