Re: turn by turn instructions to early
I have now run often and for a long time with the watch. The navigation instructions are not usable in my opinion and very confusing. Too bad actually - because the clock otherwise does what I need.
Please bring the instructions finally in a logical order and does not show me at the point of change of direction already the next instruction. I would expect:- about 100m before the turn an instruction about change of direction
- approx. 10 m before the turn a hint.
- next instruction only AFTER completion of the previous change of direction.
-
@pmossy the person who built the logic for navigation has clearly never used it or navigated with it. Seems like a very poorly built logic which has not been addressed for years.

Just discovered this problem as well. Perhaps it’s been discussed elsewhere, but, yes, the navigation prompts are a bit confusing. @pmossy described how it should function: initial prompt before turn, second prompt at or just before turn, and a “next turn” prompt some time after completing the turn.
The fact that the next turn prompt displays before completing the current turn is just poor design. My guess is that the algorithm is set to prompt the next turn when within a certain distance of the current turn (seems to be ~10m), but doesn’t have the ability to discern whether you are located in front of or past the current turn POI relative to your direction of travel. I would guess this could be an easy fix since the watch presumably already knows your direction of travel, but I really don’t know.
An even simpler fix would be to have the next turn prompt always show at a set distance, such as .5km. If the next turn is less than this distance, then it simply won’t show and you’d only receive the 100m turn prompt.
Also, is it just me or are the turn notifications displayed for too short of a time? It seems to be about 4-5 seconds. If your watch is under a jacket or long sleeves and you’ve got gloves on, that’s certainly not enough time to dig under everything and view the prompt. 8-10 seconds would be preferred.
-
@pmossy I always have turn by turn turned off, I usually just run the route by briefly looking at my watch. Sometimes I start the same route with Komoot on my phone and then have voice prompts through my bone conduction headphones, which works quite handy in practice.
-
Agree, TbT prompts are wrongly timed and confusing, and this must change.
-
@pmossy The right solution would be to always display the next turn with the remaining distance at the bottom of the map (with or without the notifications). That’s what Garmin does, and that work really well.
-
@sky-runner Very good idea
-
@Jacobus turning off TbT is not a solution even if that’s what most do.

yes, i have turned off the TbT also because of what its described here. I really hope Suunto is aware, they must have some stats from the watch usage? and see that nobody is using the TbT. and it is a shame!
Still, I love my watch! and it can only gets better!

@Antoine-Lancrenon kinda reported it again to Suunto, they are aware of the situation.

the Lord’s work
-
@isazi its the same way they are aware that their watch is laggy, atleast to Garmins and Ambits.
-
@altcmd they are also working on making the new watches less laggy, and according to most users the lag is pretty inconsequential when using the watch for real (not for YouTube)

Is there any progress or an interim status in solving this major problem?
Thanks!

Hi together!
I have a short side-question, which i think belongs to this topic:
Is it true that the turn-by-turn-notifications can only be used when the route was created in the Suunto App?
If yes, how is it possible to turn them off, if i navigate with such a route? I only want to follow the route by looking at the route on my watch, without notifications.
Thanks!

False. 3rd party partners or specific gpx files can be used to create turn-by-Turn routes

In route edit mode there is a switch to toggle turn-by-Turn on/off

@flobru3101 Easy. When creating a route in the app you can enable/disable the little turn-by-turn tab.
When you sync with your watch, if the route has turn-by-turn turned off, then there will be no turn warnings when you navigate that route.

This question still remains. And it is still a major problem.

Issue is still present as of May, 2024.
Additional issues I would note;
- Text is too small to read easily when moving quickly
- Part of the instructions frequently get cut off (especially the street/trail name)
3. It would also greatly improve the usability if a quick view of the map with the upcoming turn showed along with the notification (ie especially if you are on a data screen, for the notification to pop up with a small glimpse of the upcoming turn on the map). That way you have two ways to process the instruction - text and visual)

@pmossy completely agree, it is totally confusing and annoying receiving an upcoming turn still having to take the actual turn. But suunto does nothing about this making it very disturbing navigating with tbt activated…
