Allow routes to show on map when they are not navigated
-
Most of my outdoor activity is off-trail, and may involve small sections of rock-climbing. It would be nice to load a route and have it passive on the map for guidance… because i may deviate from the route depending on conditions (snow, etc). My experience so far is that when the route is loaded “for navigation,” a deviation from the route results in warning message, which if not answered quickly, shuts down the navigation and any current activity. Even i deviate from a preexisting route, i would still like it on the map, so i could judge my relative position.

@harlanstockman never had the behaviour that you describe, you can deviate from route and keep navigation on, navigation does not stop and the activity does not stop also. I use it that way often, deviating from route and then being too lazy to disable navigation. After the inial “off route” message you don’t get any more nagging.

@harlanstockman I am often off trail and deviate from a route. I have never experienced what you describe.

@isazi Thanks, truly. I’ll try it again just walking in my area. Have you updated the on-watch software recently?
-
@harlanstockman I have the same software you have, 2.25.48, but there is an hotfix coming soon (two weeks?). It looks like your watches crashes when you are off route, and if this is the case, Suunto would like to know why (I am sure). So if it happens again can you send logs and PM me?

@isazi Today I tried with a test route deviated with it, and did fine, so I am issuing another “Mea Culpa.” I got the message I was off-route, ignored it, and it kept issuing a breadcrumb trail. When I recircled back, it rejoined navigation.
The odd things I noticed are the lapses where it gave a position that was inaccurate to about 30-40’. I let the watch sit outside for a minute to find my location, before I began. It had me starting somewhere else, got an exact track for a while, then had another inexplicable deviation from the track. This area has mainly 1-floor homes. Even odder, in a comparison in a mountainous area with tall trees, my Garmin 65s and Suunto V had better agreement.
Red is Suunto; purple is where track should be; purple arrow is true starting point:
I’d guess the garmin 65s has a more sensitive antenna (it also does dual-frequency). When I start up on the bottom floor of my 2-floor house, the handheld always finds my position, eventually. The suunto V has found its position while on the bottom floor, perhaps 10% of the time; usually I have to go outside.

For sure it has a “real” antenna
