Hello Suunto Community and Product Team,
I would like to propose a quality-of-life feature request for the Suunto Vertical (and other models).
The Problem
Currently, the Tones/Sound settings are global (Settings > General > Tones). If you turn tones off globally, they are turned off for every single activity.
For 90% of my daily routine and workouts (like running or gym sessions), I prefer to have all tones completely off. However, during a Cycling activity, I absolutely need tones on so I can hear audible safety alerts from the Garmin Varia Bike Radar.
Switching the global setting back and forth before and after every single ride is highly impractical. Even worse, if you forget to turn tones back on before you press βStartβ on your activity, the watch completely locks you out of changing global settings mid-workout. You cannot turn the sound back on without stopping and discarding/saving your current ride.
The Proposed Solution
Allow users to override or configure Tones/Sound settings on a per-sport-mode basis, similar to how we can toggle backlight or display rules for specific activities.
- Global Default: Keep the current global setting in the main menu.
- Sport Mode Override: Inside the pre-start menu of any sport mode (or via the Suunto App custom sport mode creator), add a toggle for Tones (e.g., Follow Global / Always On / Always Off).
Why This Matters
- Safety: For cycling and bike radar users, missing an audio cue because of a forgotten global setting is a genuine safety hazard on the road.
- Convenience: Eliminates the frustration of having to dig through system menus before every single transition between different types of workouts.
- Flexibility: Allows athletes to keep their watch completely silent for indoor gym sessions or runs, while automatically enabling loud alerts for high-speed outdoor cycling.
Please consider adding this toggle to a future firmware update. It would greatly improve the usability of connected sensors like the Varia radar!

@roadrunner this feature was implemented earlier this year in other models (Race, Race S, Race 2, Vertical 2) with a software update that vertical have not received yet due to some hardware limitation. In many post in this forum it is stated that Suunto devs are working to bring some of these new functionalities also to Vertical 1, so maybe your request will be implemented!
