As it’s now public information, the new Suunto Run has a new Watch OS with the following new addition as seen in reviews:

      • Improved Widgets with more data at a glance
      • Some little UI changes
      • UV index in Weather Widget
      • New Training Recovery Widget
      • New Flashlight modes (dimmer, beacon, red light)
      • Track activity
      • More granular App notification control (can separate tones & vibration, etc)
      • App icon in Notifications
      • Offline Music playback
      • Metronome

I guess my question is will this new OS come to the other Watch lines like the Race or Vertical, as it seems logical to me to get these features onto their more expensive models?

I wouldn’t expect the new OS itself to come to the other devices but there’s been a lot of positive talk about many of the features coming across.

@Bastienhere one more thing I don’t see in your list, that I like about the RUN UI:

            • ability to select the orientation of the watch to wear it on the right wrist with screen rotated
            • more running metrics, like ground contact time and ground contact balance

            Not everything is better though:

            • while the app icon in notifications shows, it does not state the sender’s name anymore. Just the time stamp (which for notifications always is “just now”…
            • scrolling the screens during workout with the wheel is no improvement for me. does not work well with gloves (but on the other hand opens options for “sub screens” by swiping left within one screen (maps or media control).

              @Egika aah good catch!

Ground contact metrics do sounds like a good set of extra data for running, and finally watch rotation MUST be backported haha, otherwise most lefties will be left angry!

Interesting about app icon - in that case I’d much rather get the sender name than app icon if both can’t be implemented!

Does the Run SW include support for multiple sensors of the same type?

@Bastienhere What? There is Ground Contact Time in the Run? Want it (for Race S)!!! And the Metronome, after Recovery from a leg injury both features would be really welcome for the training

@VoiGAS that would be really great! Is there actually a possibility to see left/right balance contact time? I thought such a metric is only possible either with running pods or with a ‘smart enough’ chest strap.

@Alonzo it could be just measuring the GCT for each step, assign it left/right and compare the two values. That could be possible with a watch too and would be great. But I also just read here that it exists, didn’t find it in Rays Review

Also with weather, it appears there is an extended forecast (5-7 days?). I know that has been asked for quite a bit. You can see it very briefly in Chase the Summit’s video.

I have been testing the watch for a few months now.
Ray’s review is not the holy grail of information…
Here is how the data looks like in the watch (vertical oscillation, ground contact time and ground contact balance):

I’ve been using this in Garmin for years.

I usually have 51, sometimes 51.2 on my left leg and 49, 48.8 on my right leg.

This may be slightly accurate in my case, because my left leg usually has slightly longer contact with the ground, which means that my left leg is more prone to injury, while I haven’t had any problems with my right leg for years.

As soon as this feature is added to Vertical or Vertical 2, I will definitely be able to compare it to Garmin.

If you test longer, think about which side of your body is more prone to strain and injury during training and long running.

@Egika Wow, thats awesome! Could be reason enough for me to switch from Race S to Run. If I could only exchange Music for Maps 🤔
But its really strange that only the cheapest watch has the advanced running features. I really, really hope it get ported

First in cheap one. Next will be in more expensive device. :). That’s how market work. I’m not sure if older watches get this new software. It’s a good plan do to Vertical 2, Race 2 etc. with new one that compared to current versions of watches will own both maps and music, maybe even more features. This will “force” some people to change for newer model.

@Bastienhere I remember seeing it was mentioned somewhere that when using Suunto Run in sport modes, spinning the crown is used to move through data screens similarly to how that is done in Coros watches.

I think that is terrible and hope that Suunto doesn’t bring it to other models. Spinning the crown is difficult when wearing gloves. That is one of the reasons I wouldn’t want a Coros watch.

Not on a Coros watch, since the crown friction is much lower than on Suunto offerings <-- My experience: Pace 2 versus Race S. The Coros was a breeze to use even with thick finger gloves; did not try with ski mittens though… Instead I’d say that having to keep the crown pushed in for several seconds to scroll backwards, the Suunto way, is the real elephant in the room.

As for other possible transfers from the Run watch to older models, sure! I would like sensible ones, but please not the ‘Fluff’. Back in 2013/2014 Garmin introduced Ground Contact Time on the FR620 and FR920XT, as well as Vertical Oscillation. This, together with the old (useful) data point Cadence, they called Running Dynamics. We spent countless hours on the forum discussing possible ways to make the numbers actionable, with little success. Basically it boiled down to “run faster” to lower the GCT and/or switch from heel striking to mid- or forefoot landing. VO is also lowered by “running faster”, but that’s about it. ‘You is You’ when it comes to running technique, and only mileage and experience will make your body adjust to the safest and most energy efficient running style for Your Body.

Same goes for the Ground Contact Time Balance which Garmin squeezed into the RD set in 2015 (not backported to the FR620, you had to buy the new FR630…) The forum discussions were hilarious, and absolutely Zero clarification from Garmin. For example: 51-49 - meaning the GCT was slightly longer on the left foot - did that signify that something in the left leg department (hip, thigh, ankle etc) was weaker, injured or whatever than the right area, OR that your body favoured the left side because the right side was weaker, injured… etc. etc. The suggestions for how to balance a possible ‘imbalance’ took on surreal tones when one of the moderators claimed to having achieved 50-50 by holding one of the arms straight out from the body - this while running…

I certainly would not buy a new version Suunto watch based on such frivolous additions.
