I wish my watch would detect I had started an Activity and ask me to select and confirm (based on hr change maybe in conjunction with gps or other sensor)
The number of times I have missed out on registering healthy exercises, because I hadn’t pre-empted them!
My old fitbit used to do it, and my wife’s iWatch, so no excuse for suunto not to.
“I detect you may be doing an exercise…”, [watch can recommend Activity (maybe based on last one), allow user to change it to another if desired, and start] -
@Jamdog2477 such feature would require the watch to be always in an elevated power state and would significantly reduce battery life. It’s rather a feature for an everyday smart watch, which has some limited sports use as well.

@halajos good point, however, I would like the capability, and be able to be able to make my own decision if it is worth the hit.
I have one watch and wear it 24/7, so it is my everyday watch…
My thoughts on “not developing capability” cos it drains power… well you can say that about everything the watch does. so where to draw the line? who chooses if its worth it … ultimately that would be the user. Get it out there, in the field, then optimise the power drain, by fine tuning the sensitivity/frequency of the sensors vs accuracy/consistency of the capability. -
According to battery life, this could be a feature that could be turned on/off by the user.
Gyroskope + HR is always on on most watches, only GPS is off by default. So it shouldn’t be that demanding e.g. when HR goes up and Steps / Minute increase.
Garmin has a feature called “Move IQ” doing something similar but haven’t tried yet.
Therefore I would up vote for a configurable feature like that. -

+1 for this functionality, I end up doing so much activities during the day that the watch doesn’t “catch” I don’t think battery life is a blocker for this feature if it can be turned off, more often than not me and other users of this watch might want to use it just as a daily watch, not just run the occasional marathon, I would very much like to see this feature where the watch automatically detect any reasonably noticeable activity, it could be the daily commute, it could be the dog walk/run, or the missed training where I forgot to select on the watch.
Please consider, currently this is the main disappointing missing feature of the watch after using it for more than one year. -
I view my time during the day as divided between “intentional workouts” where I want to manually start the tracking, and “ambient activity” that does not need to be literally assigned into categories, i.e. walking around the house, putting away dishes, etc.
For the latter, I only care if the watch can perhaps increase my active calorie burn when it notices this movement. That is, on a lighter day my BMR (basal metabolic rate) is around 1600 calories and my active calories is about 400 making a total TDEE (total daily energy expenditure) of about 2000.
Let’s say it’s winter and there’s been a snow storm so I need to go shovel the driveway. If I can look to my calories and see that it’s higher at say 600 for a total 2200 for the day then that’s sufficent to me. I don’t need a HR graph and full metrics for this event like I would doing a 5km interval workout. It’s not like I’m often doing “snow shoveling” where I want to compare performance across multiple sessions.
Additionally, the Resources metric I can use to judge overall ambient activity for the day. Days where this has drained lower means my body was under more physiological stress, and I can use that to gauge my recovery needs for the next day.
So I do sort of get wanting some automatic tracking; in particular, going for a walk I’ve seen Apple Watch trigger detection and ask if I’m walking in the past; I typically say “no” to this as I don’t consider quick five minute walks from one part of a college campus to another worth tracking and just noting higher calorie burn is sufficient, but I can see how others might like to capture this activity. However, if I was getting micro 100m-200m walks from just doing gardening in my back yard I’d find it annoying and would turn off the feature.
So for those who are asking for this, perhaps notice whether or not Suunto is registering higher calories, lower resources, or other things during these “missed times,” and whether that data may be useful while you wait for future enhancements in automatic tracking.
