Suunto Race S general discussion

Hi All,
If I added manual activity (.fit file) into suunto app in example data from treadmill, will the activity data (i.e. step count, etc) become double since I’m wearing the Race S while treadmill but not record the activity.
Anyway, it’s a shame that suunto doesn’t have a HR broadcast feature.

I am using now S9P. Would like to go to S9PPro, but Pro has no dual band GPS. Is it way better for scrambling / climbing? Now I have something like this with old S9P. Would like more accuracy for navigation during scrambling. Therefore Race S will be better than S9PP because of dual band? And I should go with the Race S? Is Race / Vertical even more accurate than Race S?
-
@suuntastic All of them (dual band) should be more accurate. What I’ve observed in the trails (under big and thick forest) the Vertical shines. It’s better (for me) than the Ocean and the Race, maybe due to the design of the antenna? Maybe Ti plays role? not sure but it is the most accurate. Keep in mind not some huge differences but a bit better. Of course all of them are much better than what you shared
-
@suuntastic I’d say its a bit on the noisy, not smooth side. I would prefer if there was an option to reduce the vibration.
-
Been using the Race S for more than a week now and noticed the following scenarios where improvement is much appreciated:
-
Whenever I land on some screen which is not the home/default screen, I would need to go back manually. It would be great if it can automatically revert to the default screen after x amount of seconds. This only applies when not in sports mode.
-
Vibration strength should be configurable (low/mid/high)
-
Enabling phone notifications would result with a vibration on every notification. Would be great if we can enable vibrations ONLY for calls while still receiving phone notifications on the watch.
-
I noticed whenever I’m holding something with my watch hand and not swinging my arm while on a walk, steps aren’t counted correctly. This is annoying.
-
More configurable watch faces are needed with more complications
slots. Or maybe allow users to create their own watch faces and upload on some common platform for others to use. -
I also noticed that breaths per minute and current HRV aren’t measured for some reason. These were some interesting metrics on my previous watch.
Not sure where to post these feature requests so I’m trying here first.

it does so. I go into the logbook and just wait -> watch returns to watch face after one minute or so. What exactly do you mean?

I think this is physics. As the watch is worn on the arm, it can only guess that you are walking, by arm movement. If the arm is held still, there’s no way for the watch to know about your steps.

HRV is a metric that currently is only measured during the night to check your recovery status. Respiration rate was a metric introduced with Ambit3. It is a value that can be read from the HRV. I am just not sure what it would be used for… What’s your interest on respiration rate based on?

smartphone apps count steps on the base of the accelerometer measurements even if the smartphone is kept in a pocket or in the backpack and does not swing at all, moreover I noticed that the steps are about half the correct value if I walk with hiking poles, the arms swing but the arc they do is smaller in this case, hopefully the algorithm could be improved to detect steps in different situations

@Egika thank you for your reply!
Most of my observations come from years of using a Garmin watch. So, apologies if my comparison is not fair or correct.
-
Regarding the timeout, I don’t think I’ve every waited 1 minute maybe that’s why. Will try it out.
-
Regarding the steps issue, not sure how Garmin managed, but it was accurate over there.
-
Regarding the respiration rate, it was an interesting metric to observe while running (controlled breathing and all) and after sleeping. Sleep apnea related symptoms was a thing I was trying to monitor.

I believe it’s much less than a minute. For example if I go to the HR widget and rotate my watch away from me, it leaves in ~10sec. You can also swipe to the right (back) from every widget and go to the watchface or press the down button (back).
- Regarding the steps issue, not sure how Garmin managed, but it was accurate over there.
I have FR965, AWU and Race and I find the Race to count ‘active’ steps. These are steps where I literally walk not just goof around the house with minor movement. The FR965 can be tricked to count steps by just moving your arm, the AWU too but you need more simulation of movement so it’s more accurate for me. But for me the Race is much closer to the real (active) steps I’d rather count than count everything as a step.

Valid point.
Cheers.

@carabott same for me for vertical. vertical is my dream watch, but it is sooo annoying, when using timer much or achieving some more messages… Vibration is so hard and little noisy. That’s why I use daily unfortunately more often S9P and vertical more for sports (bought very recently). Hard vibrations should be configurable (daily and sports). Coros Apex 2 also gets subtile vibrations. Why not Suunto? Can’t be that there are only few persons that saying…

Can I connect my strava app to my race s?

Of course, in the SA app, your profile, and partner services
Only new activities will be uploaded to Strava, previous ones must be uploaded manualy

@wmichi How did it go with support? I just bought a Race S today and wondered if the crown was meant to be so tight - enough for me to go Googling it. Found it mentioned on Reddit as well as here. Same low screechy sound as if it is rubbing the case slightly.
-
Thanks. Also, can I get what’s app msg notifications on there?
I seem to have text and phone calls but not what’s app
-
@Bexs2247 in the app (on Android) you can configure the apps you want notifications from.
-
@Gorm-Breinholm I contacted support immediately after taking the watch out of the box. I waited maybe 1 minute in the queue and the contact was professional and friendly.
I told the guy, that I think that my watch is faulty, that I am not satisfied with my purchasement and I want to return it. They forwarded me to a website where I could create the return label without asking more questions. They already refunded the money.
The only problem was, that at this time, this website would not let me create the return label due to a technical issue. It worked 24 hours later.
This was the first time I returned/replaced a Suunto watch.

@isazi I’ve got an Apple phone

Hello everyone.
I enjoyed my Suunto Race S almost one week. In fourth day first time I seen on screen information “The device is being restored to a safe state” and after few minutes “Error 1403” then smartwatch reset all settings. Next day the same situation. Since yesterday this situation happening a few times per day, I can not using my smartwatch. Anybody got the same problem or any experience with this kind of situation? -
@Bexs2247 for some reason not yet possible on iOS
-
@Michal747 contact support, your watch seems faulty
