Screens around Altitude - having the approximative snow altitude - regrouping compass and altimeter
-
Hello all
A suggestion of improvement around the altimeter views
As skier in the alps, I extremely often compute the theoritical snowing altitude
I use for that a very basic formula : + 150 every each Ā°C
I do this super often as in fact when I come back from work it is often from3 to 5 or 7 degrees when Iām around 800 m and I would like to get a good idea about the snowing / raining limit ā¦Although it is a super simple computation, still it is a borrowing one.
I realized that this computation just at few centimeters almost touchable when I saw that touching the altimeter screen you show the temperature ā¦ so a pity to not have it
Indeed, it would have been super great if this such simple computation could have been made for me ā¦ indicating me what is this limit either in absolute height or in relative versus my current altitude ā¦I know what you will object ā¦ this 150 m / Ā°C is theoritical, might not be applied everywhere . OK it is theoritical but I do this multiple days per weeks and always I saw that at few meters more or less it gives a very good indication ā¦ also having a real barometer on some watch + some more precise abacus, this theoritical model could be fine tuned
Here a proposal for a screen.
Iām sure you will have also noticed my proposal of adding also an additional combining altimeter + compass screen (so displaying altitude instead of angle) ā¦
why ???
Once upon the time when I was young and then also in the army ā¦ we were not having such beautiful SUUNTO watch but just a paper map, a classical altimeter and a classical compass ā¦ when the weather was changing and cloud/fog arrived super fast, we were immediately taking our position thanks to the map and the compass before the fog forbid us to take some landmark on some summit and then we were navigating staying on a given altitude curve until a clearly defined point, then moving done to another altitude curve and continuing on it ā¦ ;etc etc etc ā¦
OK this is stone-age navigation ā¦ now you have the GPS and no more paper strangely to put your head into just elecronic devices ā¦ but will have been fun to have a super modern watch with still this old school but super efficient experienced old mountainers way of coming back home
