Ia there any chance that Suunto will finally provide a new firmware for Ocean. The response we got in this forum from the moderator, is far from market competitive… Nowadays we buy not just the hardware but the ecosystem, which is mostly done around software and functions it may provide. These are no longer the ages when Omega or Doxa had made a watch which worked decades the same way, now people want some more. Garmin recently release the bulk update, which adjusted functionality across all their watches for latest generation and they do provide these updates few times a year, very often proposing new feathers for devices generation -1 and -2 and, much frequent than just once a quarter. If Suunto what to be treated as a competition to Garmin or Chinese brands like huwaei, I would expect to get the service at least at similar quality (btw I moved from Garmin to Suunto, after 12 years)

@karollos I see it the same way you do. I’m afraid we bought the wrong watch or chose the wrong manufacturer. The long time for an update is justified with very careful testing of the watch due to the dive function. I can’t judge that, but I think it’s marketing . Garmin, Huawei, Amazfit all have diving functions… In this respect, Suunto has to put up with the comparison if they want to remain competitive. I personally am disappointed that the Ocean is the last light in terms of the development of the software. The life cycle of a software based Watches is logically shorter. The hardware is evolving… And so, for example, the Run has a better heart rate sensor than the Ocean… Garmin does that better. The heart rate sensors of the last watches are all the same and the software follows quickly. I think that at some point an update will come… but if the frequency is maintained and the range of functions is not convincing, this watch is no longer competitive… Too bad, I clearly bought the wrong watch.

@Sascha-Domres I feel the same way.
I was very happy when Suunto released the Ocean because I’m an old user of Suunto : Vyper, Zoop, Eon Core, D5 and now Ocean… 5 dive gears in a row…!
But as you mentioned, Suunto makes us waiting too long to improve the watch. For instance I miss the customization of the dive screen (features that you find in the Shearwater Teric or in the Garmin MK3i). And each day I look at the Garmin MK3i closer and closer. The only thing that makes me hesitate is the price 😄, especially because I have to buy 2 of them (to replace the 2 OCean of my wife and me).

@Artur-Brzeczkowski I can only agree with you. The Ocean is unfortunately an example of the fact that a really great product is neglected. I can only speculate, but I guess that the watch is too much of a niche product and that the focus is on the run, race, vertical. Stupid for the buyers of the Ocean who have placed the same trust in the product. Considering the price very, really very annoying…

I have only one thing that prevent me for buying the MK3i: the noise (bzzz bzzz) of the Garmin T2 Transceiver which seems annoying
Garmin takes these lead now, look at the new X50 computer while Suunto still proposes the old Eon Core.

@Brad_Olwin I respectfully disagree with your argument. Let me provide a practical example: there is a Chinese drone manufacturer that dominates the market, and most of the hardware they use in their drones is the same. When you purchase a cheaper model, you get fewer features activated in the software, while the top-of-the-line model includes all features unlocked. Of course, higher-end models also include some additional hardware improvements, such as LiDAR and better lenses.

The point is that today, the tech industry is largely driven by software. Therefore, you cannot expect to buy a diving watch (few are released to market every year) and assume it will keep the same software indefinitely—or receive very occasional updates—and treat that as a special gift. Thank you for a good discussion. I belive this is very important to address.

Sadly — I think for some, though not for everyone, the Suunto Ocean moment is already over. The initial euphoria has faded, and there’s too much strong, emerging competition on the market.
