@Brad_Olwin I respectfully disagree with your argument. Let me provide a practical example: there is a Chinese drone manufacturer that dominates the market, and most of the hardware they use in their drones is the same. When you purchase a cheaper model, you get fewer features activated in the software, while the top-of-the-line model includes all features unlocked. Of course, higher-end models also include some additional hardware improvements, such as LiDAR and better lenses.

The point is that today, the tech industry is largely driven by software. Therefore, you cannot expect to buy a diving watch (few are released to market every year) and assume it will keep the same software indefinitely—or receive very occasional updates—and treat that as a special gift. Thank you for a good discussion. I belive this is very important to address.

Sadly — I think for some, though not for everyone, the Suunto Ocean moment is already over. The initial euphoria has faded, and there’s too much strong, emerging competition on the market.

@tinten.addi Unfortunately you are right… if already poorly functioning OHR sensors should be installed, the entire package should at least be right… unfortunately this is not the case with the ocean at all… no more development… Sorry but Suunto has to put up with the comparison with Garmin… what is better now than with the Fenix 8? I am definitely disappointed and unfortunately can no longer recommend Suunto…

Why Fenix 8 and not Descent MK3i ?

It was 13 days ago (when I am writing this post), so it means we can see the updates no more than17 days.
If it is true… the only question now is whether the watch will receive all the updates in terms of multisport and other features like the others, and whether issues such as the lack of ZoneSense during training and similar bugs will be fixed? So, Will we also get the same functions regarding sensors — multiple sensors, battery status, and so on? I hope Suunto has the routine and professionalism to ensure that, after we’ve waited this long for their flagship, it will be truly uncompromising and in no way fall behind — as this is otherwise a wonderful piece of technology.

I’m almost certain the watch will receive updates for many sports including new features and faces, since they are already being prepared for other models and should also apply to the Ocean. However, when it comes to diving, which is what really matters to Ocean buyers, it may just be limited to minor bug fixes. I hope I’m wrong.

@tinten.addi Same here, if there is no improvement in the customization of the dive screen, I’ll switch to Garmin MK3i.

Hi everyone! What you brought up about the diving functions is interesting — and a bit worrying too. I personally really like this brand and this watch model. And what I’m about to say may sound strange, but I don’t dive at all, and yet I chose this model. The reason is simple: the materials used and the promised multisport functionality, and design. No compromises.

Now I see that you, who actually dive, have doubts. At first, I thought I could accept less frequent updates for reasons of safety, quality, and stability. After all, the diving functions must be taken very seriously — the diver’s safety comes first. But now I see that even you, who actually use the diving function, are not satisfied. So what will happen with the other so-called multisport functions?

In my point of view the perfection of the diving features is essential, but not sufficient. This watch has to be perfect both as a dive computer and as a multisport watch, as long as the hardware architecture allows it. At least, that’s my opinion. But as I remĆ©nyĆ©t, that was the underlying promise.

It makes me wonder: has the watch actually brought in the expected revenue at the market level? After all, we’re talking about a company that lives from profit. And I say this as a true fan of the brand, but I’m concerned that if the watch hasn’t met fiscal expectations, Suunto will be reluctant to keep developing it further on the software side — especially given the much stricter requirements it needs to meet.

Maybe our only hope, beyond revenue, is prestige. It would be a huge own goal to let such a professional piece of equipment go to waste after Suunto’s earlier successful dive computers. If nothing else, let’s hope the revenue from other models sustains this one too. But the best would be if we knew that the Ocean is actually generating profit for the company.

I completely agree with you. I also believe the next update will be crucial – that’s when we’ll see whether the watch is truly competitive or not. A dive computer is typically used for many years, and even the big brands only release new models after several years.

That’s exactly why the software should – or rather must – be satisfactory for users. If not, existing customers will become dissatisfied or potential new customers will simply turn to alternatives.
