Suunto Run: add outdoor rower profile
-
Please Suunto, since you only provided an indoor rowing profile, consider adding an outdoor one so that I can configure it as a kayak profile.
Thanks.

I’ve mentioned this in other threads, but will repeat: Suunto needs to re-classify Indoor Rowing.
Suunto gave Indoor Rowing a “red” color that corresponds to indoor workouts which organizes with yoga and weight training. Meanwhile, outdoor rowing is a “blue” color representing water sports. If one compares this to cycling, both Indoor Cycling and Outdoor Cycling are “orange” and Treadmill is “yellow” to correspond with outdoor running.
See this chart, and compare the placement of Treadmill and Indoor Cycling to where Indoor Rowing is:

@raven
Well, all running is yellow , all cycling is orange.
What color would you expect for rowing ?There are only 2 rowing activity types, isn’t it ?
Maybe since it’s not a sort of major category, they do not have their own color … same as skating -
@raven sure but before the colors I need the profile

Maybe since it’s not a sort of major category, they do not have their own color … same as skatingIndoor rowing should be the same color as outdoor rowing, to match what they do for indoor/outdoor running and cycling. Rowing is currently blue being a water sport (it would go with swimming area in my above pic) and I see no reason why indoor rowing shouldn’t match. Note pool swimming is also blue, and many pools are indoor (and I assume pool swimming modality does not use GPS). I’d be happy with all swimming, all rowing being blue, while using red elsewhere.
If the argument is “indoor rowing should be red because it’s indoors, like yoga and weight training” then that should apply for indoor cycling and treadmill workouts as well.
As an extension of “changing colors,” I’d argue the entire “red category” meaning “indoor workouts” is a bad organization. Stretching and yoga (which I would put together) are much different than weight training. I’d have separate “strength” and “flexibility” categories. “Kettlebell,” which is a category on my Suunto Race S but not on the Run, I’d place with “Weight Training” but not with Yoga.
For some of the other “red categories” like Jump Rope, Aerobics and CrossTrainer, a more general “other cardio” organization as they are neither primarily focused on strength or flexibility.

Yes, I’m justifying the inclusion of the rowing profile as many people who do indoor rowing do so with the thought of training for their outdoor rowing sessions. Having one without the other would be like having indoor cycling without outdoor cycling.
If Suunto is going to “fix” this to make you happy (by adding in outdoor rowing), then why not adjust the color of the indoor modality at the same time, to clearly show the relationship?
In the meantime, you might try using “Outdoor training” to record, then see if in the Suunto app it will allow you to switch to a category that is not on the Run — I’m curious if that would work.

I had tried, but the problem is the lack of paddling counter

Hmm, a kayak stroke differs from a traditional rowing stroke though, so I’m not sure rowing strokes would be applicable to kayaking? If you can customize your own workout modality on the Run, could you start with indoor rowing (to get stroke count) and modify it to turn on GPS?

I have tried but to no avail, more of a whim than a real need because indoor rowing is all I need (a couple of days a year I kayak in the mountains). Thanks!

@6iovanni A watch primarily for running and I doubt this will happen. I imagine the included profiles were a deliberated decision.
