Suunto Run + New Strap
-
@isazi after watching Joachim Perez Video, it’s seem to be an awesome piece of gear for runners, with very nice features and caracteristics !
As it’s mentionned to be a “parallel” OS plateform from other watches, I’m now very curious to see what will be brought to SV, SR, SRs…
Not the watch I would by also, but a very clever move from suunto, and a very serious competitor for other brands. -
Some info from the Spanish Forum:
- New velcro straps will be available for other watches.
- No ZS at the beginning for the Suunto Run, probably later on. This I do not understand, in my opinion ZS is one key point for running.
- New OS and platform only for Suunto Run, not the others. Both platforms should co-live.
- Features from SRun will be also in the SR, SRs and SV, update likely in July.
I think it is a great product for Suunto, a killer one (Still I do not understand why do not have ZS from the beginning). The looks, the features and the price are really good compared with the other brands offer.
On the other hand I hope all the functions that aren’t hardware compatible, are ported to the SV, more in my case that I’m basically a runner and trail runner.

Already the first reviews : french “montre cardio gps” blog review from Jerôme
Interesting things to read like “New mode for the athletics track (generalized by update to other Suunto)”, Reversible wheel side (but for this I guess linked to the new OS).
-
@Tieutieu the other Suunto watches got the “placeholder” track function in the previous update, I would expect to see a big improvement to said mode in next update
-
@Tieutieu yes, track running is new to Suunto Run and will come to other watches as well.
Apart from this, there are some changes in the user interface:
You now scroll through the screens in sport mode vertically by scolling the wheel.
And it is possible to go back to the watch face while the activity is ongoingSuunto Run has a BT device management, so you can pair more than one headphone and more than one POD of the same type
Plus 4GB of storage for offline music, that can be played to connected BT headphones.

Is this a feature which needs additional hardware compared to the “older” watches? Or will the get this function as well with a later update?
-
@Stoke80 It is a software function.
I just don’t know which features from Run will make it to older watches. Suunto is evaluating this at the moment afaik. -
Thank you. I really hope it will make it to older watches (at least Suunto RaceS in my case). As this was requested by many users already (you know).

-
@cosme.costa customers always want everything for 0 money…
That is the crux of product management. You can only loose… -
We don’t want it for free. We bought a watch for good money (ok, not as much as Garmin, tbh
).
But I think that is part of the job of the finance department, to calculate those things into the retail price. But that is not part of the discussion here. Sorry for OT

Comparing the Run to the Race S, there seem to be some odd limitations on the Run:
I guess not having the heart rate sensor on the wrist or automatic FW updates are just errors in the comparison table.
More importantly though, no SuuntoPlus?
I’m also surprised by the lack of real-time guidance during workout, that seems to be one of the most important features especially for runners.
Battery life seems really good though.

It does update over the air, and it has a OHR module

Guides should work (or they will work at some point), apps are not working, but some functionalities are already integrated in the OS.
-
@stby04 maybe suunto plus features are now backed in the FW? This was the intention of them right? Develop them separately once they mature put them in the FW. Maybe that’s why no ZS still since it’s still in beta
-
@isazi nice! So to the main point: Structured workouts - did it receive improvements? And if yes, can you share more?
And of course we all hope that the older watches will get it too if yes. -
There’s a lot to love about the Run, especially for the price. I can’t help but be disappointed by the size of the watch though. 46mm is simply too big for most female wrists. I’ve been holding out on getting a new watch for a long time, hoping that Suunto would release something that’d actually fit me. I was super excited that this could finally be it, but unfortunately us ladies have been ignored by the market once again.
Would bloody love it if you got around to this Suunto!

@aiv4r Structured workouts show the current number in Suunto Run
-
@aiv4r older watches will get better S+ guides with most requested features in next update (as far as I know)
-
I guess everyone who was waiting for useful updates to interval/structured intervals might be disappointed.
Source: https://www.sport-passion.fr/test-materiel/test-montre-suunto-run.phpNo countdown timer and no out of zone alerts according to Youtube reviews/previews. The screen is cramped with data with super small digits. And the primary metric, the current intensity, is a simple small number. And it seems, that on the interval screen the total duration of the whole workout is displayed. Those are the biggest numbers. Somehow I don’t quite understand what the designers were thinking
To put it positively: there is room for improvement. Just my opinion. But all the other new stuff in this OS looks really well designed.

only if they are an improvement with respect to SV, SR, RS firmware, not everything new is better
