Suunto Race & Vertical: pair and save multiple sensors of the same type
-
@cjanevate Hi Egika!
The reason I’m writing is because I’m seriously considering in buying a SV and after reading some reviews like the DCR one, I was looking if I can find newer info about this.
I have 2 road bikes with speed/cadence sensors and an Elite Direto interactive trainer. I also have 2 different HR chest straps.
Do you have a link for that TO-DO dev list or something we can read saying that a new firmware is going to be really released with the support? I can’t find anything about that and I don’t understand why a premium watch like the SV has still such an important issue like this one.
Thanks.

@Oinatz-Aspiazu I fully understand your case.
There are no documents out there that show when if if a certain function will be added.
Check Q7 here: https://forum.suunto.com/topic/9960/more-faq -
@Egika I got an Vertical for a very good price and I am quite happy with it. But even I got two HR Straps, one for running and an OHR one for Hikes when the watch is worn over the sleeves (bad weather, bagpack etc.). It is annoying that it is impossible to add both straps at the same time. It would be nice to know if this is on the schedule for the future, even without knowing the exact time. Suunto needs to learn, that this is a flaw that keeps many people away from their watches. Especially bikers, with more than one bike. Every competitor has no issue there, so it must not be rocket science. Btw. Syncing and updating via Wifi would be cool also.

Yes, I understand that.

I have answered this above right in this thread,
Suunto needs to learn, that this is a flaw that keeps many people away from their watches. Especially bikers, with more than one bike. Every competitor has no issue there, so it must not be rocket science. Btw. Syncing and updating via Wifi would be cool also.
Forum users need to learn that their individual functional needs are not necessarily the ones from 80% of all users.
In case of this one maybe you can make an educated guess what the percentage of all Suunto users is, that do actually have 1 BT sensor paired to their watch at all.
You’d probably be surprised by the reality… -
@Egika thanks a lot for the answer
-
@Egika Just bought a new SV.
I hope Suunto can fix this issue. Even chinese watches like the T-Rex 2 can map multiple sensors of the same time and they do pretty well. When you are more than a casual runner it is normal to have different accesories from different manufacturers.
Thanks for your answer

@Egika There are lots of other discussions in this forum concerning the quality of the OHR measurements on suunto watches (and other brands) especially during intense activity - as well as lots of reviews. The answer is generally “for intense activity HR tracking it is recommended to use a BT sensor”. Fair enough. But if that’s the case surely it would be sensible for suunto to improve the BT sensor pairing experience. They can’t really have it both ways. Other brands, even cheap brands, support multiple sensors of the same type (although not in use at the same time, of course) as well as showing info on the active sensor such as ID and battery level (where supported by the sensor). I obviously don’t know the actual situation with the BT code for the watches but as the code is quite capable of supporting multiple sensors (of different types) my gut feeling is this isn’t a hard problem to solve.

@far-blue I bought the SV Titanium because of the less weight. I understand that it could be a bit better with OHR readings than the steel one. But I don’t usually rely on the OHR, and that’s why I bought the watch. It seems to me the best watch of the market without any doubt.
I do have a Polar H10 strap because I like it, it’s comfortable and it has the best HR readings for me. I also have an HRM Tri for the swims and I will probably buy the Suunto one for the swims with the vertical. So my idea is to use the H10 and the Suunto one and I shouldn’t be pairing and unparing every time I need to use one.
The same happens with my bikes. I have 2 road bikes (one is a Tri bike for TT training and the other one is a normal road one for the climbs and road couses). I shouldn’t be pairing and unparing sensors each time I want to use one. Some friends have also an MTB for new sensors… and that also means that if one bike is near the other one or near of a friend’s bike, you don’t know which sensor you are pairing each time you need to pair /unpair a sensor and because you need to do this everytime. And as I said, even chinese watches can pair multiple sensors.
I’m receiving the watch next week. I have read that there was also an issue with multiple alarms too but I understand is fixed now. I usually wake up on mondays, saturdays and sundays at different times for my trainings.
-
Sorry, just seen the multiple alarms issue is fixed. Finally, it seems I’m receiving my SV Titanium Solar tomorrow. Pretty happy.
So I’m moving to Suunto from Garmin. I understand Suunto will fix the multiple sensors issue in a near future. It’s the only missing thing in the watch I think.
At the end, more features and less bugs result in better devices, happier users and “less bad noise” (so more potential sales).
This seems to me a very (critical) important bug specially for people who is used to a regular training or triathletes and it’s just only a software thing that can be easily fixed. It is also something than everybody , even cheap chinese watches is already doing fine. And this is a premium watch that wants to compete with other premium devices.

Now, 4 month later and we also have a new watch model - the Ocean- that also just became a firmware update. But what we still do not have is the possibility to pair mor then one sensor of the same type. Since I am talking about a new watch, I opend a new thread in the “Ocean” Forum, wich was kindly deleted, so I just want to pull this thread up again.
The argument of @Egika that only a small percentage of owners is using such a feature is misleading: you can say the same for a lot of other features as well, for example I absolutely do not need any map fuctionality, but the bottom-line is: how do Suunto watches perform in comparion to their peers? And as Suunto is obviously seeing their products, these are “premium multisport wachtes” - like, first of all of course, Garmin’s. In comparison to their watches Suunto is still lacking a lot: depth of data analysis, amount of data available, customization options in gerneral and especially for watch faces, web based access to trainings and data, music player… only to name a few.
I have great sympathy for Suunto as a smaller company and like their “produced with renewable energy” claim, but all watches I tried so far did not even get close to what Garmin offered. Now with the “Ocean”, I was again optimistic. Not that you get me wrong: a lot of things are pretty goog - GPS accuracy and heart rate is on the same level as Garmin from my perspective. But the details… thats a differnt story - and the ability to pair mulitple sensors is just one of them.
But perhaps we should be optimistic here: as said before even much cheaper chinese watches offer this feature, and since Suunto is chinese owned since 2022… who knows…
-
Hi, I’m following the post because I’m also looking forward to it.
I have a speed sensor and a Garmin cadence sensor for the 2) on each of my 2 bikes. In addition, it is impossible to couple the cadence sensor!? Possible or not?
-
@benedikt76 my argument maybe misleading from your point of view.
Fact is, that we are not the ones deciding the importance of certain features.
Suunto does this and they do it professionally and in the best way they can.
As this feature is not there yet, I can only draw the conclusion that it is prioritized lower than other things.
Priorities might be totally different for you. Still Suunto is selling their solutions not only to you but to as many customers as possible. And they came to the conclusion that it is more helpful for sales to have climb guidance and watch faces from the app than multiple sensors.
It is what it is. -
Since yesterday with the New Suunto ZoneSense Feature the multiple Sensor pairing got more important for me. Because it was total anoying to unpair my OHR sensor, pair the the Heart rate Belt use Zone Sense on my bike Ride. Today i did a Trail run with my Running vest, in this case the Heart rate Belt is unconvenient. So i unpaired the Heart rate Belt, tried to pair the ohr that did Not work. So i put my i Race Off and restarted then i could pair my Ohr and i could start the Training. I think many more people got the Same issue, because they use ohr, but for Zone Sense they Like to use a Heart rate Belt. So it is could to Know that Suunto does have this topic in the back of their mind. By the way Great New Feature is the Zone Sense and all around i am totally happy with my Race and all the New Features from this year
-
@Sebastian-Wagner-0 just good to know: there is no need to unpair a sensor.
Just pair the new one. It will replace the current one. -
@Egika
Thx.
I did that. From the Ohr to the Heart rate Belt. But then back to the Ohr the Race did Not found my Ohr again. The i unpaired the hr belt, same Problem, then i restarted the Watch and now the Ohr got paired again. So my thought was that in the Cache or so from the Race where some data Sets remained there and it would be better if i had unpaired the Ohr before pairing the hr belt. But that was only a thought of mine. I don’t Know if this was the Problem. -

As a person that has done several long distance triathlons, if you are a serious biker, Suunto is not your brand (yet).
The reason is that you probably have speed, cadence and power meter sensors and it is very likely that you also have an smart trainer that also has those sensors inside. But it’s more. If you are a cyclist perhaps you also have several bikes (mix of btt, tri and/or road bikes). That is pretty common.
Bike power meter sensors do work but as far as I know are also not fully working because of this issue. You can also have several arm and chest straps and you will only be able to pair one (but this last thing is not so bad like the other things nobody can’t see here)
I sold my Race for this reason. I waited a lot (first with the Vertical) because I wanted to give an opportunity to Suunto. But it’s not coming and I need a working watch.
I’m tired so I ended finally selling it because at the end the watch is not working here. The other thing is that there are some silly issues that are not going to be fixed, like to not being able to put a wake up alarm using weekdays. A lot of people, like me, works from home 2-3 days per week. Now I have my old Forerunner 935 (bought in 2017) that does not have those problems. Pairs everything perfectly (and has the custom alarms). Now it’s coming a T-Rex 3 to my home. A cheap watch that does not have those both issues (and It has the best screen of the market, also has contour lines in maps and WHR is very accurate).
But here with the sensors we are speaking about something very important and it seems that Suunto does not realize that the watches have a very serious issue here. And we need to say it because this is also feedback and it needs to be said so developers can understand the whys.
I’m sure Suunto will solve this and all the silly issues too but while the marketing team thinks that watchfaces are more important than fixing a serious problem for cyclists, your Suunto’s watch is not for you.I’m pretty sure I’ll return to Suunto. They are working very hard (and it’s very exciting to read about all the incredible good things like the recent new metrics with the chest strap) but for now, until this issue is fixed, Suunto’s watches are not valid for cyclists and triathletes. Sad but it needs to be said clearly.
