Bug while following GPX track "marked path"
-
Hey guys,
For the second time I came across a big bug that I ought to share with you :
When using the Navigation mode, on “Chemin Tracé” (mode where you get the track on your watch, but no indication like “turn left/ turn right”), on two occasion the track displayed on Suunto APP & Strava was completly wrong (the track was only a few hundred meters long).On the first occasion :
- I downloaded a GPX style a friend sent me that he made from his Garmin
- I started to run a bit too early and the watch didn’t lock on GPS for the first 100m
- Then the watch locked correctly, I didn’t follow all the time the GPX track (we changed our minds and added a few kilometers)
- During the run, the pacing, distance and the position on navigration screen was flawlessSo, when I saw that the track didn’t display correclty, I thought it was because either the GPX track had a bug, or because I didn’t wait for GPS lock at the begining, so i didn’t think it was a bug
!BUT
Last week I went running to a new place (Paris) because I don’t know the area, I made on the Suunto app a loop around the “Bois de boulogne” , sent the track to my watch and went running
- I waited long enough before starting
- I didn’t follow the track (between the maps and reality there is always some change……)
- During the run, the pacing, distance and the position on navigration screen was flawlessBut, I got the bug again, the track on Suunto app is very small, but all the other markers like distance and pace are good, even the Altitude graphs are good.
So this is the second time it happens and its really bothersome, I plan(ned) on using this feature for my next ultra trail (so i can see what’s ahead……) but I really can’t trust it if the my whole track goes away……
Did this happen to you guys ?

@Elipsus
“chemin tracé” is a mode in which you expect to follow as much as possible this path (like following a marathon route). If you navigate far from this route, maybe it is causing these issues.
For normal navigation, you should better use “itinéraire” navigated mode. -
@Mff73 Well in that case the feature is pretty much useless : If i can 100% certainly anticipate where I’m going, I’m not going to bother to make a GPX trace ?
No one can anticipate that one particular street is going to be closed and thus you have to do a 100m detour.
The fix for this bug would be pretty easy : if gps lock accuracy is good (for example, more than 8 GPS locked), the GPS route is the true route, otherwise, stick to GPX file trace.As for the “itineraire” thing I stopped using it as its always making the watch buzz at every intersection , is there a way to stop that ?

@Elipsus
for itinerary navigation, you should un-checked the “turn-by-turn” option in SuuntoApp for a particular route if you don’t want the watch to buzz at each turn.for your first issue, it was just a guess from my side, i never used this option, as i really want to see where i was, and not where a precalculated gpx think i am

The “snap to route” is assuming, that you are actually able to follow the planned route exactly.
If you don’t know this, better use the normal “route” navigation option.“Snap to route” can be very useful for like a race in an urban environment. You know the exact course, no change possible, and GPS reception could be difficult between tall buildings. With snap to route you get precise distance and position regardless of GPS quality.
Think about this use case. It is a feature
In your case just use “routes” with your route and all will be fine. -
@Egika oh i see, i understand a bit more the snap to route…
However, I’m still not sold on it, because “what if” the gpx track given by the organisaion isn’t perfect somewhere/had to make a last minute detour ? I have the very real risk of a completely butchered map display…
From my point of view, not handling this situation seems a bit of an oversight…
For my next run I will stay on the intinery thing without directions, thanks for the advice -
@Elipsus
afair the main purpose of snap to route is to give “real time” covered and total distance and instant pace as more precise as possible on 100% known route.That’s it
For everything else use normal navigation. -

Your watch will show the GPX planned route, the activity will be plotted by GPS and the deviation will be captured properly in the app afterwards.
