Sleep times bug
-
Another bug that continues to plague is the sleep. I agree with DCR on why in todays world we still need to input a sleep window, but hey-ho. I have my sleep window set to 10pm to 7am. I had set the watch on the shelf around 20:30 and picked up again around 22:00. I had plenty of button presses as I set the alarm. However when I woke up the next morning, the watch measured sleep from 20:30. Not sure how that is possible when it isn’t even able to measure HR. Seems rather odd but I know this feature has been an issue for me for years.

Hey mate I have posted a few times mine can struggle with sleep too it either nails it or gets it completely wrong from what I’ve seen. Mine seems to have gotten better since the hot fix although I don’t think that has anything to do with it. Last night it recorded just over 8 hours which is correct and the night before it recorded something like one and half hours and butchered it
-
@gone-troppo thanks! I know these issues have something weird in how Suunto sees sleep as it has been happening for years. The issues persist after the hot fix.
-
it is very strange that they have not improved the sleep monitoring, with so many sensors on board and continuous heart rate measurement it does not seem impossible
-
@altcmd
Whenever putting a watch down, make sure that the HR sensor has stopped flashing. If you put it down and there is enough reflection off a surface an OHR sensor can continue to take readings off that surface. -
@Jamie-BG Sleep detection is based on movement alone.
“Note: All sleep measurements are based on movement only, so they are estimates that may not reflect your actual sleep habits.”
-Suunto Vertical manual.

@Ilya-Sul
OK - thought they were using more the first beat that was on the S7 - would have made more sense or to have developed something off the back of that, as pretty much everyone else is using OHR and movement for sleeping. -
@Jamie-BG thanks! I am aware of this ‘oddity’ and intentionally pace it sideways or face down to avoid activating the hr.
-
@Ilya-Sul I am aware of this too. Hence I intentionally move with the watch and press a few buttons to make the watch aware that I am still awake. Yet the algorithm seems rather odd in how it is calibrated to detect sleep. On another but related note, the he sensor seems activated when it detects anything underneath it and I feel it might be ghost-measuring hr when not wearing the watch. A lot of peculiarities with how Suunto does these metrics.

My watch last night tells me no sleep recorded so this is the second time it has done this anyone else has this? Was a normal night approx 8 hours sleep never got up during the night or anything. This morning no morning report and when I go to sleep screen on watch just says no sleep recorded ?
-
I’m having similar issues with sleep after the last hotfix/update. Last night I fell asleep at around 22:45, however my watch says at 3:42AM (sleep duration was only 2:05):
HR was also not measured during sleep, in the morning the graph looked like this:
There are a few other issues like touch not working sometimes, but I’ll post it in an other thread.
-
I also noticed some different behavior with sleep monitoring after the update. In my case, the times are good, but the recovery estimated is less than before… I didn’t change my settings like HR, weight,… and I feel really good as the temperature in the night is not like summer in Bavaria I don‘t understand this behavior…

As said before, Suunto is probably moving away from Firstbeat, so all these things may change before the end of the year.
-
@isazi thanks but would be better if someone from Suunto can actually comment on this because it seems like a big deal if people are seeing a lot of garbage data from a 2 month old watch which invariably impact other metrics as well, for e.g. Resources. For now, an update that is probably coming equally also means it might not be addressed even though these issues are ‘known’z
-
Continuing the trend, I did not even wear the watch last night as I was travelling but the watch thinks I was sleeping for 30mins between 20:49 and 21:19. Amazing how this can happen when you don’t even wear the watch.

@altcmd what I can say is that sleep will be much more reliable before the end of the year. And resources too, and maybe other things too.
