Is there a dramatic difference between the 9PP screen/readability and the Vertical?
I wouldn’t call it dramatic, but there’s a difference. Vertical is a much larger screen, and I think that, and slightly updated fonts and increased text size, do deliver somewhat better readability. Brightness-wise they are roughly the same at medium brightness.
No backlight:
Medium backlight:
I’m just happy Suunto didn’t go the way of Garmin and put another solar layer over display. Sapphire glass is great, but it’s not exactly terrific for MIPS screen readability.

@mikekoski490 being 52, one of the main reasons for me ordering the Vertical was the display. I struggled with the display of the S9P and the S5P because it was a) too small and b) too low on contrast. The Verticals display is way better! Together with the bright backlight I don’t need reading glasses anymore when interacting with the watch.

Thanks both of you. I’ll just wait and see what Amazon dot ca has to say next week then and keep it on order.

@TrailEyes No @the5krunner? Ouch!
Totally an unfortunate rookie mistake on my part, one deserving of a mea culpa. I even linked to 5krunner in my own article, so I really should have had it there! Thanks for linking them!

@TrailEyes I just read your review. Well done!! Im not sure why your review didn’t come up in my searches before, but they are really well written and complete!
Is there a dramatic difference between the 9PP screen/readability and the Vertical?
Thank you!
I agree with the comments @NickK made about readability. I’m 45 and wear glasses when not exercising, so readability is key on trail runs. And for me, it’s less about brightness and more about size and fonts. So the 9PP and Vertical have similar brightnesses, but the size of the Vertical makes it standout in big way in terms of visibility. The displays are 0.2" different, and it shows! -
@NickK So your Amazon Suunto arrived! Congrats!!
-
@mikekoski490 Yes, latish last night Amazon delivered the bacon. I even got time to take it on a test run through the neighborhood.
GPS was fantastic, a visible improvement over S9PP. I wouldn’t call it the best GPS watch as @the5krunner did, but it can certainly hold its own against latest multi-band gen Garmin and leaves COROS well behind. Basically much vaunted Epix 2 got a very tough competitor.
OHR was surprisingly good too, no cadence locks, no spikes – another improvement over S9PP. Alti was great too, spot on compared to elevation adjusted by maps, and that’s despite 15 mph headwinds in places and gusts up to 25-30 mph when I run yesterday.
O, and the hack to run S+ guide and an app worked too.
-
@NickK what is the hack?
-
@altcmd Courtesy of @isazi and @Brad_Olwin:
- Schedule a workout either using a third party of choice (say, Training Peaks) or via Suunto app if the workout is created in the app
- When you select an activity, a message would pop up asking if you want to do a scheduled workout. Select yes.
- Then in Options scroll to S+ apps/guides and select whichever S+ app you like
- When you get out of S+ apps/guides submenu, you should see “Multiple” as opposed to just a guide or just an app name
- Start your workout normally and you should have both an S+ guide screen and notifications, and your S+ app
-
@mikekoski490 I believe you will see a noticeable difference.

Some of the reviews I have seen are so incredibly biased/based off lifetime of Garmin use it’s hard to take seriously. One I seen was complaining because it only had 9 watch faces to choose from !!! Another because he had to push too many buttons to get to one of the settings that you would probably never need to change again !!!
Some people cannot be pleased, some reviews found legitimate things that could be improved.
