solar charging
-
@sartoric I’m in an outdoor place! With the strong sun
-
@riccardo88ve I would be curious to know what your battery level was at. The reason I ask is maybe solar harvesting is reduced with a higher battery level and that is what you are seeing?
-
@Todd-Danielczyk Now the battery is at 84 %, but I had done some tests by covering the screen and then putting it back in the direct sun… all the rings became complete for few minutes
-
@riccardo88ve I am wondering if it’s reducing solar due to the higher battery level you have.
Once your watch drops below 75-80% I would test it out again as it may be trying to limit and protect the battery. Just a thought.
We haven’t had consistent sunny days here but should in the next couple of days. My watch is currently showing at 69% battery so I can test mine out Sunday to see what I get.
-
@Todd-Danielczyk
it shows how much sun is collected from the panels. as you say, it doesn’t charge above a certain level (I recall 90%) to protect the battery.
the watch does not show how much it was charged, but anyway, the watch’s battery will be drained less when exposed to the sun at higher battery levels -
@freeheeler thanks for the confirmation. I couldn’t remember the cut off level of battery but I remember it being said somewhere; 90% sounds right.
As for the rings I cannot say for certain I’ve ever seen mine go over 2 but will check for @riccardo88ve as we will have decent weather on Sunday (I get to be outdoors to test my Vertical out? For scientific purpose?!? Count me in!).
My bike is all ready to go and the Vertical is as well. Will confirm if I see more than 2 rings or not.

@Todd-Danielczyk
you should see all circles filled if the sun is strong enough.
I have seen it many times and in solar watch face I also see (almost) all bars filled when spending a day at the beach with different activities (of course the watch can not always be pointed at the sub, hence “almost”) -
@freeheeler I saw a different behavior of the solar circle after charging, until the battery level was the first time under 95% after being full charged… then I saw only the little flash inside the 3 circles, when the screen is locked. I say most times, because sometimes it was not different from the ‚normal‘ behavior…
-
@SuperFlo75
double checking in a bit… it is the behaviour I saw and recall.
will post again -
@freeheeler I can check this about every 4 weeks, because the battery lasts very long
-
@SuperFlo75
I know, it’s hard to test, right? 6 charging cycles after Vertical release the Race was releasedI have tested it just now and it seems to be inconsistent.
I get full circles above 95% but only when I touch the screen while the watch is already exposed to the sun. when I touch the screen and then expose it to the sun it shows the flash only, as you report.
same with the harvest widget.
my impression: it’s a small UI bug. in the background there will be no charging.
I’ll report it.
-
@freeheeler It is also my observation that this behavior is inconsistent… but in case when I can see the charging circles above 95%, the charging level increases, and when I cannot see the circles, the charging level does not increase…
But it‘s not a big thing! -
Unfortunately at this point, I doubt it could be a bug of the new firmware … in full sun it never reaches all the full circles. I think I’ll contact the assistance
-
@riccardo88ve
you can but you don’t have to.
I’ve reported an issue to Suunto -
This morning I tested it again and I had the UNLIMITED POWER gauge consistently showing for many minutes … then I stopped looking at it
Of course I was under 60%
-
@freeheeler So for you it’s not a malfunction of the vertical … but a software bug?
-
@riccardo88ve
I wouldn’t even call it a software bug, but I am not a software developer… my wild guess: it’s simply a wrong output.
but actually it doesn’t matter what it is as we can’t do anything anyway except for sending logs and describing the observations. and that’s what I did, so they know, they prioritise and then look into it -
@riccardo88ve said in solar charging:
@freeheeler So for you it’s not a malfunction of the vertical … but a software bug?
it’s a feature, not a bug
Jokes apart, as said it probably simply doesn’t use solar if the watch still has a certain percentage of charge
-
@Todd-Danielczyk thanks
