Praise for Suunto's MapBox integration
-
I’ll admit that, until this evening, MapBox as a brand name never really registered in my mind. But lots of credit to Suunto for using that API – and even more credit if they worked to customize it to the Suunto app in any way.
I volunteer in wilderness search and rescue, and we had a call-out this afternoon for a missing 76-year-old. It turns out he lived near an intersection between a gravel road and a fire road. The problem was, neither Google Maps nor the printed fire department maps showed the existence of the fire road. But I just happened to have run a trail and part of that fire road about two weeks ago, and when I pulled up the Suunto app and the MapBox map with my route, it changed the trajectory of the search and opened up a whole new possibility for where the man could be located.
He was found, and Suunto (unknowingly) played a key role in the strategic approach to the search mission.
I’ve always loved the detail, POIs and clear topo lines of the maps in the Suunto app (especially when compared with certain competitors). Keep it up! This stuff is great, and it can be more valuable than you may have ever realized!
