Backlight

@gerbs same here.
We covered this topic already in the FW announcement post and in a separate one.
This is the third about it… -
Things may change again in the future, who knows.

@isazi toogle mode is even stated in suunto 5 manual. It is very weird that suunto removes functions specified in product manual. I am happy that there is development of firmware and happy that they want bring snap to route to suunto 5. But if it is in cost of loosing toogle mode, i will stay with older firmware. I used toogle mode in ambit 2s, and i use toogle mode in suunto 5 and it was one of must have features for me. I don’t need backlight during day or daylight activities but i need to be able to turn on backlight during night by simple upper left button long press.
-
Is there any option how do downgrade it? I really need toggle mode, this is useless for me.
-
@tomas5 I don’t doubt it existed, I just never used it.
-
@vio112 Just drag and drop an older zip file? Or is that not working?
-
@surfboomerang
I never did this before. Sorry for my stupid question. Where could I find zip file and where to drag it? -
@isazi yes i know, i just hope this feedback will get to suunto. I am really excited about snap to route and i wait for these release of firmware. But when i learned, there is this deal that i must trade one function for another, i will really think twice before upgrade. I don’t know how big downfall it will have to battery life. But if rise to wake or how it is called enable backlight even when there is enough ambient light, it will be enabled very often. Since i check time and notifications regullary. And if another solution is to dissable backlight, than i cant use watch at night because look for backlight in quick settings when i don’t see anything on display it’s really bad idea. It was so easy, long press upper left button. Really Sunto, WHY???
-
@vio112 it’s not a stupid question. I have never done this before myself.
Some people on this forum update their watches by downloading the zip file and then dragging and dropping it into Suunto link. I thought maybe it would also be possible to do this procedure with an older firmware zip file to perform a downgrade. -
@surfboomerang if someone enlight as how to do this, it would be great. I would give it a try to see what battery impact it will have. Since now I use backlight few seconds a day (via toggle usually at night), with rise to wake it will be probably minutes a day. But with possibility to get back to older firmware it will be no risk. Now I charge once per week (every 7 days) and I would like to keep it that way.
-
@surfboomerang @Tomas5 Yes, you can install basically any firmware for your watch by dragging the zip file on the gear icon in Suuntolink. Be careful with Macs, they sometimes unzip the file automatically.
-
I also would like we could disable backlight when a notification is received.

one have to know what is S5 nickname (ibiza for S9B, amsterdam for SSU, etc…), then someone should find and share the proper nickname FW zip file (maybe already on this forum) that allows S5 and this famous toggle mode, and finally, Suuntolink will allow you to drag and drop this zip file on it to install this downgrade FW version (with all risks of a FW installation).
-
@mff73 thanks, sounds good, just to find right zip file I will give it a try.
-
@vio112 can you tell in few days/weeks if there is significantly higher battery usage with raise to wake instead of toggle ? Thanks.

@tomas5 The Suunto’s all have city’s names internally in development.
‘Amsterdam’: ‘Suunto Spartan Ultra’,
‘Brighton’: ‘Suunto Spartan Sport’,
‘Cairo’: ‘Suunto Spartan WHR’,
‘Forssa’: ‘Suunto Spartan Trainer’,
‘Gdansk’: ‘Suunto Spartan WHR Baro’, ‘Suunto Spartan Sport Wrist HR Baro’, ‘Suunto Spartan WHR Baro’,
‘Helsinki’: ‘Suunto 3 Fitness’,
‘Ibiza’: Suunto 9 Baro
‘Lima’: Suunto 9
‘Monza’: Suunto 5For Suunto5 you get the 2.10.26 FW like this:
http://firmware.geo.movescount.com/production/Monza-fw_2.10.26.1047-J.zipand the 2.12.30 version:
http://firmware.geo.movescount.com/production/Monza-fw_2.12.30.1410-J.zip -
@tomas5
I would like to, but I definitely stop to use it as daily watch because of this backlight issue and because of no option to disable touch screen which has very big issue in water which means that you can not use them properly in water - shower, pool and sea and it has also significat impact on battery life https://forum.suunto.com/topic/6553/manual-lock-of-touchscreen-in-time-mode-s9baro
Therefore I am not good person to test it, I use them only for sport activities, otherwise I do not wear my S9B and they just laying down on my working table.Therefore I would like to immediately downgrade it because it will solve this backlight issue.

@egika
Woow, nice and thank you so much. -
@egika thanks, do you know how to get last 4 digits of my current firmware? I have 2.14.16 and if i give a try to new one, i would like to return back to this current version.
-
@vio112 next week this firmware will be released for suunto 5, so now when i have backup plan i will test it myself without worrying. If it reduce battery life i will downgrade .
P.S. touch screen lock is reason i bought Suunto 5 and not Suunto 9 because it would drive me nuts.
