Suunto 9 Bearing Navigation
-
Is this the equivalent of Garmin’s ‘project a waypoint’?
Or is it just a locked compass bearing?
The S9 manual says you can optionally add a distance parameter, which implies that the watch might then go on to create a POI.

@david-young Sorry, I found that this has already been discussed on this forum, and it seems that a POI is created, or at least it is if you input a distance.
-
@david-young Neither a Garmin-style projected POI as such, nor a simple bearing lock: more of a single temporary GoTo. The watch doesn’t save it, AFAIK.
-
@fenr1r OK, thanks for the clarification. A temporary ‘go to’ would suit my needs perfectly. And you could always make a permanent POI once you got there!

Result! (Plus, you know the App can create actual projected POIs for the watch, I bet.)
And you could always make a permanent POI once you got there!
Very true, if you find anything of enduring interest.

Yes. I have used a Traverse for the last 4 years. I’ve found it a reliable guide in many different countries, but am now looking for something with a bit more connectivity.
The S9 ‘bearing navigation’ enhancement is under-sold on Suunto’s site. It’s a handy upgrade from the compass lock you get with the Traverse, but the S9 manual fails to mention that GPS is employed to make a temporary waypoint, and Suunto’s support staff don’t know about it either. (They told me it’s just a compass lock.)
Anyway, I just ordered an S9 Baro from Decathlon, delivery tomorrow.

@david-young The bearing navigation is one of my favs.
I love it when I train with a close friend we have something like a 3h run and we just roam.
We call the feature : “Lets go there, most probably”
FYI: I am a person that does not use a lot of feature other than this and navigation
