Number of downhill runs in alpine skiing

Re: Number of downhill runs in alpine skiing
I am new to S9. I just used it for the first time with Alpine Skiing (Downhill). I did 13 runs on a local hill. The watch reported 62 runs and once the data was passed on to Strava, Strava shows it as 125 runs! Though, Strava was able to correct the vertical to 2183 m.
Also, the total descent is off. The watch reported 2869 m (downhill descent) and 3823 m (Descent), but calculating the number of runs X the hill’s altitude, it is about 2150 m. Btw. what is the difference between “downhill descent” and “Descent”?
Is this a problem that can be corrected? Am I doing something wrong, or is it the watch.
Until now, i was using the Ambit 3 and never had this problem.
Any advise?
thanks

@mdzott
yes, you did everything within your possibilities… you’ve reported it
I’ve observed this weird counting, too. But honestly, I don’t care about the number of runs, as every slope I ride has a different shape, steepness and descent. I only look at daily descents, nothing and really nothing else for downhill skiing… sorry, telemark skiing -
@mdzott can you share the activity?
I noticed last season and the years before with SSU, that a run will be counted sometimes when you stop during you run (or walk a little in the flat before continuing the descent)
It would be helpful to see your altitude profile. -
If you are in iOS, the sport mode is not “working” in terms of what it is possible to see in SA (there are some posts regarding this issue for iOS). The watch seems to record “correctly” the info at least based on what I was able to see in Movescount February last year. This winter I didn’t check (the slopes are still closed in my country)

@egika
I don’t think that short stops count… if this would be the case I would have +1k runs…short and slow uphills or flats, yes maybe.
but for sure if you have slopes with multiple lift sectors in series. If you ride the lower sector it detects the lift and counts, then you go up the lower and second sector and ride it detects the second sector, too and you already have 3 runs.
Maybe it’s more a sector counter that a number of descents counter? -
@egika
A silly question: how to share it? -
@freeheeler - the number of runs is just a number, agreed, who cares. But the Total Descent should be accurate, but it isn’t. Any ideas?
-
@egika this was a very simple day on a local hill - multiple runs on a single chair. It should be reasonably easy to figure out how many runs.
I noticed in SA that there were numerous tiny runs (a couple of metres), probably when moving through the line to the lift.
I would gladly share the file. Let me know what you would like to see (and how to upload it). -
@MdzOtt I don’t sky, here there is no snow but @Brad_Olwin does although he is more into skimo. Maybe he knows.
-
@mdzott as far as I know, I am using s9 baro, when you start to descent the watch start the interval, and the interval is finished when you start to ascent.
If you have small descents and ascents the watch will record that as ski runs.
Alpine skiing sport mode syncing problem with iOS is another problem, still unsolved unfortunately. -
@nseslija
I did a small test recently and could not see a reasonable pattern… I did one decent without any bigger climbs that S9B with its 3m threshold would recognize and it showed 3 runs.
The theory that a longer pause might not be right either as I did a lot of quite similar pauses to get the fire out of my legshttps://www.suunto.com/move/skiingone/603a4763d03bd02037ba863d

@freeheeler
do you see that in QS, there seems only to be 2 laps (descents) vs 3 in the SA ?
-
@mff73
and the sum is not the total duration -
@freeheeler I only see one descent there… I must say that I didn’t experience such a behavior with the watch… Did you feel vibration when the watch started a new interval during your descent?
I can feel the vibration almost every time, and it is when I start to descent, and when the ascent starts on the chairlift. -
@nseslija
I rarely feel it. It’s only when I pay attention when I enter or leave the chairlift station. I never notice the unwanted descent count vibration -
@mdzott here is the link to the activity: https://www.suunto.com/move/marekdziedzic/6037d336cdd3874e077c7966

@mdzott In the activity i just posted, the total descent is ~3800 m, whereas, when you count the runs, it should be around ~2500 m.
-
@mdzott
I see 2’868m descent… it’s about alright.
but 62 runs… hmmm… -
@freeheeler when i looked at the SA, there were multiple runs of 2 m, 3 m etc. It seems that it counted every single step i took waiting in line to the chair.

@mdzott
possible, not good and not logic with the threshold… but only the dev teams knows
