GPS accuracy - track and field
-
@thomas-ma I noticed running profile does not record GPS every second, but a random interval between 1-4 seconds. On road races with distance of half a marathon I noticed the watch is always spot on in distance, but on a 400m track I can imagine it cuts the corners less accurate then it should do.
Maybe that explains the difference.

This is from this morning in Amsterdam. Standard running profile, GPS+Beidou.
-
@isazi I know the place well

@isazi image isnāt from SA, right?

Interesting. Next time I will try the GPBeidou system and see if it reports better result.
And you can tell from the screenshot (from Strava) my GPS is completely off track.

@thomas-ma
Hi, have you tried āTrack and Fieldā Sport mode for running on track? I can remember that I read somewhere that it (should) has some special setting for tracking running on Track. I have never tried it by myself. It just rang the bell for me, when I read your postā¦ -
@thomas-ma keep in mind that the satelite overlay isnt always 1:1.
-
Thanks. i understand it is not always 1:1.
May be next time I will try the normal ārunningā mode while running on track and see if there is any difference.
-
So I run another 10k using the regular run function, and here is the map from Strava. 10k should be 25 laps, but I think I ran 24 laps + 250m(?) from the map.
-
my 10k, itās quite accuracy
-
@zhang965 Did you use loop? just curious if work well in a track.
-
@thomas-ma 24 laps + 250m would be rather outstanding and excellent in terms of accuracy.
Just check how and where the 400m lap really is 400m long ā¦ I think it is nearly impossible to run the āperfect lineā for so long. -

auto lap 1k
-
@bulkan I used the loop S+ on the track, worked pretty well.
-
@shrek3k Actually I checked again as I only ran 23, not 24 loop!!!
I stayed at lane 2 most of the time so it should be 407.67m per loop. In theory it is 407.67 x 23 = 9,307.41+ 250 = 9,626.41. Thatās off by 373.59m or 3.7%.

Yo Kid, get a footpod
Gps cannot get that precision,

Let me explain something about the GPS,
There are lots of factors which could be affect the GPS accuracy.
iāve got different distance/speed in the same field with 8 hours apart.(and sometimes the field is not parfait 400m )
secondly, coros might have an improved algorithm for field, which you can set your tack length before running.
Your experience is the SUNNTO GPSās distance is more than the real distance,
but some of us, who get the experience where the GPS distance is less than the real distance. So the solution is obviously,
Buy a footpod such as stryd to get the precious distance with your suunto 9,
Buy a coros for the tack sport, if you consider itās GPS is better. -
Stryd is your new friend, cheaper than the Coros and I think the community is not like this one but I could be wrong.
Garmin has track, even you can choose the line you are running.
-
So yesterday I ran another 5k at the same sports ground. This time I synchronized the Suunto 9 with my phone on site first before running.
I ran 11.5 laps at lane 4, thatās 11.5 * 423m = 4,864.5m, off by 135.5m, or 2.7%.
