Spartan Ultra - recording activity with deactivated GPS - nevertheless ascent is available
-
I use the SSU on my Fazua Evation motor as a display of some data delivered by the BLE device of the motor.
Power (3 sec, 10 sec, 30 sec, average, max.), cadence (actual and average).
Therefore I created a sport profile (I call it indoor cycling) with 7 fields and connected BLE device of the Fazua Evation motor as power pod and Polar OH1 as heart rate sensor.
In the options on the SSU GPS is deactivated, the battery usage is 10 percent for a ride of 2,5 hours.
So far a perfect solution.
If I regard the activity in Suunto App on the phone all data are available, normalised power is not available, only average power. No problem so far, because Strava does the correction.
If I regard the activity in QS I have additional the altitude (min and max) and ascent/descent. I was really astonished. (The shown distance I added manually.)
Does it mean, that the altitude and ascent/descent data are recorded by the SSU and the barometer? GPS is deactivated and the start altitude is calibrated manually to the correct value.
That is great!

@pilleus said in Spartan Ultra - recording activity with deactivated GPS - nevertheless ascent is available:

They are. If GPS is turned off and there’s no other distance input, direction (acceleration) changes seem to be the distances measured. Up/Down, turns, etc.
-
@fenr1r there is no distance in my activity on QS, zero meters. I added the distance manually to have a comparison to the activity recorded with another watch (ascent/altitude).
Nice to have the data ascent/descent/altitude through the barometer only.
And the difference after the activity to the other barometric watch was 13 meters in the total ascent!
That is great!

@pilleus Is this one of those “powered sports modes lose some data component(s) in the various syncs” deals? The 300m I got (vs 2+ actual km) was from “mildly customised walking mode to Original Flavour Movescount.com”.
-
@fenr1r The activity was recorded with the SSU (as indoor cycling, because I assumed that GPS is disabled by default, but I had to disable it in the options manually), synced to Suunto App and synced to QS.

@pilleus
If you look at the raw data file in Android SA data folder, you will see really what watch has measured and registered.
All softwares then shows what they want to show. QS showing what is in fit file, but file file is also cloud generated not raw data. -
@mff73 in the summary.json the ascent is available, the same value as QS is showing.
In Suunto App there is no value shown, may be due to the choosen sports profile.
I will change the profile to mountain biking and may be the ascent is shown in SA too.

Subject seems appropriate to my question, reviving an older thread to ask a question about the SSU and current SuuntoApp activity altitude data when GPS is turned off.
The watch will record the altitude profile and display it during the activity ( running or biking ) and also display in the summary, but the SuuntoApp only shows the min and max altitude ( lowest and highest point ) and the ascent and descent values.
Suunto App does show a time series for vertical speed and temperature when biking and a whole bunch of other metrics for running. Neither biking or running will show the altitude on a time graph.
Do other Spartan Ultra users see the same, or is there a calibration needed in order to show the altitude time series?

@bradleyd this sounds like a suunto app bug do you have a link for the activity ?
