GPS track "open water swimming" much longer

I ask you to help me understand why using the “open water swimming” mode the GPS track is so jagged and much longer (about 2437mt against the real 1100mt)?
(I swam straight to the edge of the beach and I didn’t abuse alcohol before swimming)

@Teutch you’re lucky to have any track at all it’s generally hard to get a stable gps signal while swimming because the hand is often under water which is very effective in blocking the signal. Try putting watch in buoy or on your head (under hat or something similar).

You should wait for some time after you get GPS signal, but before starting of activity for watch to “warm up” with GPS. I usually have relativly ok swim path graph, close to reality while swimming outdoors

@Łukasz-Szmigiel
not generally… only with Spartan…my Ambit works great in open water. https://strava.app.link/QuRM0uvUHab -
Hi there! Did anyone manage the situation with open water swimming? I’ve tried to swim many times with different options as GPS only and GPS+Glonass. It seems that the watches gets less accuracy that it used to be 2 years ago. Recently I’ve tried to warm watches by switching on training before go swimming. After I had waited for 5-10 minutes I started activitiy. But eventually i got huge descrepancy between real distance 1,5 km and measured by watches which showed 2,2 km! My wife swan together using Garmin Fenix which showed very accurate track without any warm, just using cold start.

@yurgo Which Garmin does she use? All 945/Fenix 6 and i think all Garmin with Sony chip tend to understimate distance when set up in open water swim mode as i tested in this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M88WksWOn1w

She uses Fenix 5s. We swam many times at places where i exactly know how long track was. It could easy be checked by maps. As well as we raced at competitions where the the distances were approved and checked by GPS. Every time I faced with much less stable distance measurement than her watches and than real distance. Usually spartan shows more distance and very shaped track.
The problem with OWS tracking lasts for some years. Why doesn’t anyone pay attention for this situation?

Maybe because it is techinically difficult to solve (just a guess!).
On garmin forums there is a lot of complains also about that topic on various watches. -

I practice the only swimming and this type of activity is very important for me so i feel disappointed every time when checking my results at OW. However I enjoy using spartan at pool training to be honest.
