The logic behind default GPS mode settings in different sports modes

@łukasz-szmigiel to be honest and without really knowing , maybe it’s going to be completely reworked or attached to a more bigger task.
I thought there was at least a workaround for this but I might be wrong.
Anyways. Additionally I would say ping me back here in eta 3 weeks after the product + fw is launched to push them again

FYI: This is even more buggy than I initially thought. I just realized it as I was too lazy to change it to either Custom or Performance so I left it on broken post-custom Endurance. However when looking at path it seemed strange to me that the points plotted on the map are more like in 1 min fix instead of 2 min fix. So I’ve downloaded GPX from QS and it’s indeed 1 min fix.
It seems that S5 doesn’t switch to Endurance from Custom. It seems so from the UI but judging from the GPX - the track is actually saved in 1 min intervals, so:
There’s no OHR because the watch enforces Endurance and the UI changes to orange.
But the GPS mode is as defined in custom (Good = 1 min).
So what results is some kind of weird amalgamation Not a custom sports mode and not a default Endurance either.
Steps to reproduce:
- Go to any outdoor mode
- Go to battery modes, set custom
- Set OHR on, set GPS good
- Confirm custom
- Notice start screen turns blue
- Either exit start screen or start the activity (doesn’t matter, it’ll work this time)
- Go to the same activity
- Notice the UI changes color to orange, indicating the watch defaults to Endurance
- Start the activity and record ~15 min or more
- Check GPX for timestamps - after initial few minutes of 1 sec it defaults to 1 min.
@Dimitrios-Kanellopoulos I know what you said before about this issue, so no additional pressure - just reporting my additional finding as it seems really buggy now.

@łukasz-szmigiel I am a bit confused. Why would it not use 1min GPS ?
-
Btw I have a workarround. In order to remove the custom dbug, you can set the custom to be performance (change the settings as so) and then use it. It will be green the next time.
Maybe the same happened with you @Łukasz-Szmigiel but instead of making the custom performance you made it endurance ?

Well running, walking, you get the idea

It should use 1min GPS as defined in Custom battery mode. However - the GUI indicates that the watch is in Endurance, which is 2min GPS. Also, OHR is off despite being on in custom.
So: UI is Endurance. OHR is Endurance. GPS is Custom.
To sum it up.

I know that you need to set the custom mode to equal performance in order to reset the bug.

@łukasz-szmigiel isn’t endurance 1min ?
-
@dimitrios-kanellopoulos yes, endurance is 1min, Ultra 2min
-
@egika, @Dimitrios-Kanellopoulos, seriously? Is endurance in S5 1 min fix?
-
@łukasz-szmigiel I think so. (if you want me I can ask the others)
At least for s9 endurance is 1 min and ultra 5min. But I don’t use those modes personally.
-
@dimitrios-kanellopoulos so it may be that I’m dumb as a rock. I don’t know how but I was quite sure it’s 2 min in S5 so I was fighting with custom mode for my casual walks when I need just an estimation and there’s no need to drain the battery with 1s.
But still ohr would be handy for better calories estimation as without ohr it’s significantly lower and it seems that one can’t force ohr with endurance if it’s not custom.
-
@łukasz-szmigiel I get it and many at suunto. We will be changing the settings system. Takes a while though so don’t expect a change soon.

Sorry, got mislead by the word endurance. this thraad is about S5.
It has no Endurance or Ultra. Just Best and Good.
Best is 1s, good is 1min.
-
@egika isn’t it called performance (green) and endurance (orange)?
-
@dimitrios-kanellopoulos errrr it just came to my attention that S5 does switch to 1s fix on navigation screen when on “good”. It even allows to load POI or route. I don’t think it used to be like this on previous firmware - I think that all navigation features were missing on S5 when not using performance. Is it something introduced in recent firmware or am I a potato?
-
-
@dimitrios-kanellopoulos press both
I swear it wasn’t there. But what do I know. I’m a potato.
Anyway - it opens some opportunities for actually using the “good” gps mode on S5, ie. on hikes where the speed is so low that 1s isn’t necessary but the navigation is a must. Good to know it’s there.
-
Welcome back, it’s been awhile
This time, your friendly potato would like to bring you, my fellow S5 users, a pro tip on how to get an extra battery mode that persists on a particular sports mode, as some may want to use it and it’s not widely explained in the manual.
So S5 has two battery modes built in - 1s with HR and 60s with no HR.
But if you set custom mode with GPS set to OK, a custom mode will be available (after exiting the training screen) with 120s fix (similar to Ultra on S9).
So if you set it - the next time you reach for this particular sports mode, a blue (custom) mode with 120s fix will be available to cycle via the top right button. Cool, eh?
The only minor drawback is that in S5 it’s impossible to disable HR in custom battery mode - the watch will always force OHR on so you’ll have to go to workout menu and disable it regardless.
But - for low speed activities when ascent/descent and OHR are not important (slow hikes or everyday walks) - this gives up to 80 hours of battery life - even more if you add screen timeout.

@łukasz-szmigiel It is 1 min on the S5, I have done testing on this.
