Suunto Spartan Ultra - How to display informations during activity recording?

Hi everyone!
I’ve been using a Spartan Ultra for a while now, but mainly running and cycling.
I’m planning on using it in the mountains (ski mountaineering and alpinism) and I would like to know how to do the following things during an activity recording :

display compass
display barometric trend (what I used to have on my Suunto Vector, showing the evolution of the barometric pressure over the last 6/12h)
calibrate the altimeter (when passing through a point with a known altitude, to recalibrate my altimeter)

I could not find how to do these things while recording an activity, and I find it quite limitating when beeing out in altitude.

Nope … only while out of the exercise mode.
Nope … only altitude graph can be used in sport mode screens.
Nope … you have to stop the exercise, calibrate, then start again.

this is now @tiftif waking up from nice dreams…
at least you can do a compromise on point 3 as fusedalti is working quite well. Of course you must not override it with manual alti adjustment 30min before the activity

Sadly I understand how the watch is working and how bad it is for mountaineering
I guess there is no hope to get these points in future updates?

If I stop an activity and start (a new one) again, is there a way to merge them to get a single activity from these 2?

But you can measure your daily steps and calories with the watch! Aren’t you excited about that?

Another feature useful for mountaineering which is missing in Spartan and S-line is building a route from an activity in the log on the watch. That would be useful, for example, to bail-out from a camp in a whiteout by backtracking approach recorded on a previous day.

yes there is a way to do that, but it is outside of Suunto universe… it is called quantified-self.io … check it out and play with it. In my opinion it is the best tool to comoensate for the missing Suunto Web!
You can merge several activities and set ticks that they count into your annual statistics. Then you can delete the single activities etc… check it out it’s nicely made

I know this SP (Suunto Plus) is almost completely forgotten again as nobody knows the purpose of it despite Strava effort… (or did anyone hear anything about it recently?? ok, to be fair, it’s a calm time of the year…!)

showing a compass and a barometric trend (independent from altivalues) could be something for SP… or simply another screen within an activity but I don’t want to judge about the complexity of that request

That is because SuuntoPlus is mostly a marketing trick at this point. Everyone would be really excited about it if there was an API, a watch emulator to test SuuntoPlus apps locally, and a SuuntoPlus store to submit and share apps with the rest of the community. That would explode functionality of the watch. Without any of that SuuntoPlus is completely dependent on Suunto developers adding new apps, and that isn’t much different than Suunto developers just adding new features directly to the firmware without SuuntoPlus.

I thought we could do that, but you’re right. You can only use bread crumbs mode in the activity, hence the day you arrive at the camp, not the following day.

What is most frustrating is that it is “just” a question of software, and could be easily done if “apps” of modules could be developped by third parties…

Is there any way to request changes or updates on SSU or is it too late in the Spartan development cycle?

The better watch for mountaineering is the Ambit 3.
It can do what you expect and is still part of the current watch lineup of Suunto.
Looking at the Spartan Ultra as an advanced mode that can do everything previous models could and more, is wrong.
SSU is targeting a different user group.

@Egika yes I know. The Ambit 3 was the watch I was targeting at first as it also had a better battery life, but the doubts of having it supported after the end of movescount at the time didn’t help to make the decision and I went for the Spartan instead

@tiftif I found my SSU quite accurate for altitude without the need for adjustment. I do not think that you need to do an adjustment. Although you cannot see the barometric trend, the Storm Alert will function. The compass will not display but if you have a route loaded you will get a North indicator.

@Brad_Olwin no need for a route to display north … there is the breadcrumb display that does that - yes, not a compass but still the next best thing.

Exactly this! A Suunto Plus app and development from independent developers would be awesome and would rocket Suunto forward in terms of usability of the 9 etc

Actually the objective of SuuntoPlus afair is to give to third party a way to develop watch “app” that can access any of the suunto watch sensors data.
So it shouldn’t be bounded to Suunto’s development

Of course it’s not for public/final user.

But I’m a poor spartan user, so … no Plus for me
