Pros/Cons of Suunto 9 BARO * ONLY * be fair and polite!

@cosmecosta Something wrong there, mine locks faster than my A3P used to, within 1 to 3 sec.
-
Thanks to all. I did some test this afternoon and the GPS lock was within 10 or less seconds. I guess I had something wrong with the previous AGPS, and after today’s run it was fixed.
Again, thanks to all!!

@Brad_Olwin
I think your watch is used to being connected rather than disconnected
I did not count seconds with my watch but it is pretty fast. -
here’s another comparison…
I personally think FusedAlti has improved. I haven’t adjusted either watch before the run. Both watches for best comparison in performance mode, GPS only.
I’ve lost satellite connection on S9B sometimes between km 3 and 4.
The pace on S9B sometimes was way off reality as I see in the graph.
The total ascent on S9B is more than on A3PS, I did not expect this as it was once closer. But there are so many things effecting this…What disappoints me is the route planner of SA. The precision of total ascent was to the meter in the last test I did. This time it’s significantly off.

New user of the 9 baro (I come from SSU).
adjustment gps performance, output enduranceavec constant pace
First impressions:
-trace gps OK but not extraordinary. better with gps + galileo?
-distance OK
-altitude: calibration done before leaving (10 min) but erratic altitude, 55 m instead of 44
-FC HR: disappointment! (I’m used to the cardio polar belt) start indications 100% FCM, rhythm ebdurance: large variations sudden enough +/- 10 pulsations
I read that it was necessary to put the watch high enough on the handle but it tends to slip. Also that the pils could pose problems. What are you doing? and do you have solutions / habits to improve use? -
@Rob33
OHR (I guess? optical HR on the wrist?) is a difficult topic.
I would use a chest strap if you care about precise HR data. It even saves some more battery@all
I went paddling with my surfboard in the lake today and saw that my total ascent is 33m… I must say that there were no waves and the lake does not have sooo many hills… what did I do wrong in the sport mode setup that the activity “standup paddling” counts alti? (I use this for SUP and surfpaddling on the lake) -
@TELE-HO I have ascent and descent kayaking in lakes with both Garmin and Suunto watches. Could be the weather, or maybe you had calibration with Fusedalti during the activity. Can we see the alti profile?

By why did Suunto eliminate barometer profiles? In Movescount any water sport would be setup with Baro profile, and that means that pressure changes would be treated as pressure changes and not as altitude. Also FusedAlti shouldn’t affect total ascent for any indoor or water sport. Suunto keeps simplifying things, but these simplifications don’t always make sense.
-
@silentvoyager but water sports may need the altimeter, e.g. for white water or simply river kayaking.
-
@isazi
but paddling by hand changes pressure, hence alti by submerging the sensor with any stroke…
I once setup my A3PS incorrect and dud some fantastic 15’000m ascent on the lake
this could now be possible wirh S9B by default abd obviously no chance to change? -
@TELE-HO
This is exactly what is missing in the new watch line from Suunto: Choices.Different people, different sports, different needs.
Everyone has its own set of datafields and setting for their sports. The only thing Suunto has to do is to give me the choice of selecting a certain settings and data field so I can combine them to a setup that is useful to me. Another person could have a whole other setup for the same sport because it is useful to him. -
@TELE-HO I try to not get my hands under the water when paddling
-
@TELE-HO BTW those almost instantaneous 10 meters drops (or raises) are strange. And I just mean strange to be happening in the real world on a lake
-
@isazi
my assumption is that the sensor measures pressure change and FusedAlti says: no not possible and tries to correct it… but I’m not sure if FusedAlti is reacting that quick?I’m 100% with @surfboomerang the watch must be more customizable… also a gym workout with ascent is not really what I want to see… yes I do jump lunges… but not that high…
-
@TELE-HO for the gym workout, just make your own activity and remove all the fields related to speed and movement. It’ll work.
-
@isazi
you mean custom activity?
I don’t record gym workouts frequently… on Sunday I did… but more because of testing the OHR once again.Let’s hope Suunto gives us more customization on the sport modes. I don’t go paddling in the lake so often… and for surfing (let’s call it surfing when I try to catch some green and immediately end up in the washingmachine ) I never use my watch. It is a minor issue for me… but I don’t know how swimmers handle this? Do they get the result:
1’000m distance swim while 500m swim-ascent? -
@TELE-HO yeah meant custom activity. Would be really nice being able to customize also default activities, but custom activities are already a very good workaround (they’re more than a workaround, but a workaround for this specific issue).
-
@isazi
this means for synced 3rd parties that I need to change the activity there manually?
I think I’ll give this a try, thank you -
@TELE-HO customisation begins with a base activity, and the type is derived from that. I made only one customised activity for indoor climbing and Strava and QS both see it as climbing.
-
@isazi
just looked into it and of course I have all my sport modes customized. Or did I get it wrong now?
I have selected the screens I want and the datafields as I want… that’s what you mean by custom activity?
Because the only fields I have for e.g. SUP are: distance, duration, avg speed, speed, max speed… but after the activity it shows ascent in meters and the comment HR reading was not optimal (I’ve put the watch over my wetsuit…)
And for gym workouts I use the customized activity cross fit with PTE, duration, avg HR, HR and % of max HR
…I think I miss something here… thanks for your help!
