Confusing power saving behavior of the SSU
-
I find the power saving and airplane mode options confusing on the SSU. The power saving option for time mode (settings->general->power saving) is not documented in the SSU user’s guide, I could find it in the S9’s manual. This option disables bluetooth and GPS, and sets the display backlight brightness to 10%. Airplane mode disables bluetooth. What annoys me is, that when any of the two is activated, they override the corresponding setting in the sports mode’s power saving settings, and there’s no notification (like the recently introduced one about wating for GPS signal) indicating that when starting an activity. Last I didn’t pay attention to the HR indicator on the activity start screen and started running without HR measurement, because airplane mode was on. What I would like to achieve is to avoid battery drain caused by the bluetooth connection with the app, control when the activities are synced (preferably through WiFi when I get home). I could either activate the power saving options on the watch, but for the activity recording I need to manually disable, which I either forget, or in the end the app will sync the activity right away when I stop the recording. Alternatively I can disable BT on the phone, which I prefer having on for other reasons.
It would be nice if entering a sports mode would enable bluetooth and GPS unless those are disabled in the sport mode’s settings, possibly with a warning to let the user decide to go with the changes or keep the current setting. -
@halajos I end up just killing Suunto App after every sync. I don’t use notifications, so I really need to run it for a few minutes per day when I sync activities. It would be much less hassle if there was a switch in the app preventing it from running in background.

I do exactly the same.

Hi i am not sure you are all saying this right.
Enabling the powesaving mode from options will disable bt etc but once you go to start an activity it will respect the settings there.
I have power saving all the time for example so i have no suunto app connection, no vibra etc but when i start an activity all those come back (hr belt is connected)

@Dimitrios-Kanellopoulos I’ll test the power saving mode once again. Once I had enabled airplane mode and didn’t have HR even after few minutes from the start of the run. Stopped the activity, disabled airplane mode, and I got HR readings immediately.

@halajos
Power saving mode is different from Airplane mode, isn’t it? -
@Mff73 yes, power saving and airplane mode are different. @Dimitrios-Kanellopoulos I was not patient enough to wait for the GPS when I tested power saving mode. I’ve repeated the test, with power saving mode enabled in the general settings the watch enables GPS and searches for HR belt when I start an activity. But when airplane mode is on, BT remains disabled during the activity on the SSU. This may be OK for the watches with wrist HR, but for the SSU i’ts wrong. As airplane mode is a kind of safety feature, simply overriding during an activity may conflict with regulations, but at least the watch should warn and offer the option to turn on BT for the duration of the activity.

@halajos hmm. Airplane mode shuts down all broadcasting on wireless due to regulations.
But isnt powesaving what you are looking for ?

@Dimitrios-Kanellopoulos yes, power saving is OK for my need. I was experimenting with airplane mode as well, and forgot to turn it off. On my next run I was surprised that I had no HR readings, was suspecting the belt until I realized that airplane mode was still on.
