Is there any way of turning the light on in Suunto 9 without changing the screen (because of a button press)? I can’t find any.

@djibarian This has been discussed a lot in the past.

The way triggering backlight was originally designed for Spartan series is to tap the watchface:

        https://www.suunto.com/Support/Product-support/suunto_spartan_ultra/suunto_spartan_ultra/features/backlight/

But since Suunto 9 the touch is disabled by default in activity mode, so there is no easy way to trigger backlight unless you enable the touch in a custom battery mode. You can try middle-long press on the middle button - long enough to not switch the screen but not long enough to enter menu. Personally I find that difficult to use, especially when running.

I find it quite ridiculous that there is no easy way to trigger backlight. The screen contrast is on low side so I often struggle to read it without backlight when running in dim light conditions, such as a deep forest, or when running in sunglasses. Sometimes I end up turning on permanent backlight through the activity context menu. That stays on until the end of activity or until turned off through the menu. But that requires quite a few button presses.

@djibarian hold middle button (during activity) for some seconds to get into settings, then turn on backlight.
You can also turn it on before activity in battery settings.

Turning the light on all the time is not a great solution. The best way I found of doing it is pressing middle button twice while not in activity so the watch goes watchface > time/battery screen > watchface; and while in activity pressing twice top button to pause/resume quickly.

@djibarian Why would you press it twice in time mode… One is enough

@Dimitrios-Kanellopoulos It depends. If watch is “awake” (the seconds are animating) you have to press twice. If watch is “slept” (seconds aren’t) then once is enough.

@silentvoyager I’ve read again your post and checked your solution about pressing the middle button enough to not change the screen but before entering the menu and I think that’s not bad. You have to get used to press about 1 second and you have to press about 4 seconds to enter the menu, so you have a 3 second range, which is not bad at all.

For me now all the mentioned solutions are good enough, depending on the situation.
