@mountainChris Hi, what do you reffer to as steep terrain? Eg climbing with a rope vertical or a 20%-40% grade ?

@mountainChris correct. You can give it a try. If that fails, meaning that fused alti + GPS goes wonky , my suggestion would be to use a mode that does not have fused alti. That would be a mode with no GPS or just turning off the GPS.

            Just for the reference:

            • If you climb a wall (rope) I understand that the GPS can be wondering off
However, the GPS altitude is not calculated via the “same” way and I am sure it should work much better, not destroying so much the fused altitude calculations.

But I have not tested this personally so I do still hold my doubts.

Yesterday I summited a peak with a very steep trail just before the highest point. This mount is 1616 meters high, but the watch (Suunto 9 Baro) got 1669 meters as the highest point reached. How is it even possible to miss the correct altitude for 50+ meters? It was a very clear sunny day and I was partially covered by some big trees. Could it be the trees?

                    Hey!

It seems fused alti does correct altitude only if a “certain” GPS accuracy is reached.

I often use the watch in difficult terrain. If the altitude is calibrated corrected before entering a route the climbing piches are recorded corrected and only the effects of barometric influence are visible.

This is a workout where I’ve climbed single pitch routes in an icefall in a small canyon. As you can see… perfect results:

So I see no issue here

                    (Used watch: Suunto Spartan Ulta)

I do no manual corrections and FusedAlti works extremely well. Here is a link to last Sunday’s climb/SkiMo in another forum. Some of our climb was quite steep 50°
