@Sascha-Domres it makes sense to know the difference between pool and open water swimming:

open water swimming is using GPS information to track the distance. Hence it only can work outdoors with a proper view to the sky and with a swimming style that regularly has the watch above the water level (freestyle) or in a buoy or under the cap etc.

pool swimming is using the movement detecting of the watch to find out if you turn at the end of the pool. The watch is simply counting lanes. You can adjust the pool length to match any pool size in the pool swimming sport mode options.

Please use pool swimming and the custom pool length. The watch can only operate within what is physically possible.

@Egika Thank you, I already understood that… that was a large hotel pool whose length has no standard. I thought the situation was comparable to that in the sea and I hoped that at least somewhat more realistic values would be tracked. But the watch didn’t track anything in the first 15 minutes is just bad. After the soft reset was tracked but unrealistic. That gives no confidence to use the watch in the sea for which the open water function should actually be… but above all you have to perform a soft reset again…

The one marked in green was about my actual swimming direction. I waited outside the pool for the GPS reception before I went into the water . It is an outdoorpool…

@Sascha-Domres ok, this is important information. Outdoor pools should work with open water swimming “somehow”. I was doing some triathlons that started with doing lanes in an outdoor pool. Since triathlon mode used to work only with open water swimming, I had to use this mode.
The 500m swimming was logged by Suunto Race S as 449m - I think this is acceptable regarding the “misuse” of the mode.

With this in mind, and you swimming freestyle, the watch should indeed log something better. As for every other open water swimming, it is important to give the watch some minutes time to proper acquire all satellites in the best possible way.
After a soft reset, all AGPS data will be deleted, so the watch is in a bad position to get a proper GPS signal in time.

So for your scenario I can recommend two things:
                    a) use pool mode for pools and set the correct length. this is the best
                    b) If you have to use open water swimming, make sure to have the watch synced recently and wait a couple of minutes in the pre-start screen before entering the water.

Here is my open water pool swim i mentioned above:

@Egika Thank you very much for all the information. I actually didn’t wait a minute but only until the arrow was green… maybe that was the reason…

@Sascha-Domres If you sync with the mobile first, the GPS satellite data should be updated as well. The you wait until the arrow goes green, that should work also.
