My wife, after years with a Garmin 235, is feeling the need to change her watch. She’s considering, among others, the Suunto RUN. But she has a few questions that I’m sharing with you in case you can help.

She mainly runs, but not exclusively. So:

      • How is it for half marathons, especially with structured training and TrainingPeaks integration?

      • How is it for simple trail running and basic navigation?

      • How is it for mountain biking and occasional pool/open water swimming?

      • Does the latest update include a padel tennis mode?

The Suunto RACE S would certainly cover her needs, but she’d prefer not to spend the extra €100. Perhaps, even staying within the Garmin ecosystem, the simpler 165 would suffice. What do you think?

        • there is no Training Peaks integration on the Run. You can manually create interval workouts that sync to the watch using the Suunto app, but if you want proper sync with a 3rd party app like TP, then you’d need to go with one of the higher spec watches like Race/S/2.
        • basic navigation is fine using a breadcrumb trail, but there are no actual maps displayed, again the Race/S/2 are the ones to look at for proper navigation with offline maps.
        • should be fine for mountain biking, I’ve not used for swimming so can’t comment on how well it works there
        • the only racket sports I see listed on mine are tennis & badminton. I don’t think there is much smarts in these kind of sport modes, they just monitor heart rate and label the synced activity appropriately. She could always just create a custom sport mode for padel tennis.

Maybe wait to see what black Friday deals there are, could be some discounts on the Race S I imagine.

Used several times for HM and 50k and it works really well for me. I often play paddle and I use tennis profile. Can’t speak for MTB or swimming. If you’re in .eu you may find it now at less than 200€, a great deal imo.

@owend Thanks for the clarification. Without the TP integration, it’s completely ruled out. She primarily works with a personal trainer who sends her workouts weekly via TP, so…🤷🏻‍♀️😊

@enriqueescoms The 9 Peak Pro could be an option. On the downside it has no maps compared to Race S. But if she wants Maps its a lot more expensive in the Garmin Ecosystem than Suunto
