Garmin recently released their X50i dive computer. A Garmin exec confirmed that they are leaving the watch-sized dive computer market and will only focus on full size dive computers going forward. Perhaps Apple Watch Ultra is a really hard to beat in the wrist-sized computer market.

I wonder if Sunnto is working on an answer to the X50i. If you are aware of any news or rumors about upcoming dive computers, please share them with me!

Apparently SUUNTO has showed off a 3000-nits bright MicroLED prototype dive computer at DEMA 2024 show in November, that should be fantastic even during brightest tropical afternoons. Is that a potential 2025 release?

@Aquario it would be strange Garmin leaves the wrist computers since watches are the core products of Garmin (for outdoor activities).

@ogillot as the Fenix 8 includes diving up to 40 meters, there a special diving watch range isn’t needed anymore.

@2b2bff 40 meters isn’t enough to consider it as a dive computer.
If they include a 100 meter ability in the next Phenix9, maybe.

@ogillot I guess if you wanna go deeper than 40 meters, you wanna have a “real” dive computer anyway. Not something you also wear for sleep tracking…

@2b2bff I guess thats what this discussion is about. Real Dive Computers 😉
The D5 was the latest release from Suunto if you don’t count the Ocean. I for myself changed to Mares some years ago as two Suunto Zoops had a defect with Depth Sensor. Not happy with the Mares, but I won’t switch to a 6-7 year old Model now.
A new Suunto would be tempting, but I wait how the RGBM vs Bühlmann decision will look like. I am quite happy with RGBM

@ogillot But the Garmin is also really heavy and expansive for a sports watch. So maybe the universal watch approach is not always the best. I can buy a Race S and a D5 for the price of the Suunto Ocean (or Garmin Descent).
                    So I would love a Suunto D5 Mk2 or a Suunto Ocean S Titanium 😉

I have done 2,500 dives and 30m is the recreational limit for most dive agencies such as PADI. To dive down to 40m you need a Deep Diving Speciality certification and Tech Diving certifications to go deeper. Wrist based dive computers such as the Ocean and Garmon Descent models are more than good enough. The Apple Watch Ultra doesn’t have transmitter integration, has poor battery life so won’t do 3 dives on 1 charge after 1 year, and needs a subscription to an app.

If you want to go deeper than 40m you should use a specialist dive computer IMO that can easily display all of the information on a long and deep dive.

I have used the Ocean for 5 months and am happy with it. The upgrade in December was a big improvement as I use the arch to display the compass and lower data field for tank pressure. I also use it for workouts and health tracking including sleep tracking. It is light so I don’t notice it on my wrist and the battery lasts about a week depending on how much diving I do in addition to a daily workout and sleep tracking every night.

I replaced a larger Aqualung 770r for diving as it stopped working, and my Apple Watch 7 as after almost 2 years of use, the battery only just lasted 15 hours of use.

@jack_pokoj in France you can dive down to 60 meters if you are certified. Often I dive till 42 or 44 meters deep, that’s why Apple Ultra doesn’t fit for me.
Ocean is quite good yes ! But I hope more display option for the dive screen

The Suunto Ocean’s hardware is very good. However, the software/firmware feels stuck in time.

This is where Apple has been dominating the market. Suunto should consider hiring Oceanic’s development team to improve its dive computer.

Soon enough, Apple will release an Ultra 3 or 4 with even better hardware. Then, there will be no competitors ahead…

Exactly. Apple just patented an underwater communications protocol and underwater iPhone UI (https://patents.google.com/patent/US20200104021A1)

I suspect Apple Watch Ultra 4 or 5 might include some underwater features.

That’s the filing date. Approval date and priority dates are more recent.
