suunto race s wifi problem after update 2.39.20
-
Hi to all suunto owners, I hope that someone can suggest what else to try?
Upon unboxing suunto race s I download app on phone, set profile made connection between watch and phone, done initial syncing, and connection to wifi network. Update software immediately started and finished witch success. Next step was to download map, but no success, just status on app waiting to download and on watch there is no any progress or notification??? Then I tried to cancel marked maps for download, delete existing connection, and at that moment show begin. No matter what I do can’t add wifi networks. Spent several hours looking forr solution but no success. Tried following:- factory reset watch several time, no success
- delete app from phone, no success
- change several routers and several mobile phone because compatibility issue, no success
- change settings, on routers and mobile hotspots, bands, bandwidth channel, low complex password, open wifi, no success
- checking settings on watch, wireless connection ON, discovery ON, charger ON, regional settings, no success
- Observing real time log on router debug mode, no request is comming toward network??
Conclusion is that after suunto upgraded to sw version 2.39.20 wifi is not working any more.
Thank you a lot.

@disadisa my watch did hard reset itself ( one day after updating while starting a workout ) but I could download maps to it afterwards, the wifi network was still there in the app. I did not delete the app though or change anything on the app side, so this is maybe the reason.

@disadisa seems to be an issue for some users. Affecting my Vertical as well. I downgraded added the map I needed and then upgraded again to the latest firmware. Only way I could resolve it.

@ChrisA @larrybbaker Appreciate your answers. I forgot to mention that I tried also downgrade to version 2.35.36 as that version of package is out of box, but again without success. During that attempt watch went to safe state, been worried about bricking. After while the watch booted with error 1301 reverted to latest version of software 2.39.20. Advice for other in hidden menu for diagnostic or reverting firmware, avoid to use option to delete OTA package. On that way, suunto somehow in state of safe mode will revert to firmware version which is worked, in my case 2.39.20. Maybe during update to newer version changed kernel, so it is impossible to revert to previous SW version. So, I will wait for a while in hope that suunto support will announce new release to resolve issue.

Note downgrade firmware as solution is not worked for me, tried 3x. Booting only 2.39.20
For reference ticket number 7512741 at suunto support answer below:
Dear Disa,
Thank you for reaching out. It seems like the latest firmware update (2.39.20) may have caused the connectivity issue you’re experiencing with downloading offline maps and using the network.
For now, we recommend downgrading the firmware to the previous version, which should help resolve the issue temporarily. We are also escalating this matter, as other customers have reported similar problems, and we hope to have a fix in the next software update.
We appreciate your patience, and if you need any help with downgrading the firmware or have other questions, please feel free to contact us.
Best regards,
Cristina

@disadisa Please provide steps to download grade as I am having trouble downloading maps as well. It keeps disconnecting network connection.

@drewabinkley Hi, we are still waiting answer from suunto suport when will be new update. Meanwhile you can try as workaround next step:
- If you have connection to network on app, go to offline map library and delete maps in status waiting for download, I meant cancel. Then use only one region map at the time to download, when finished, select another one and so on. Multiple region map download has an issue. If you have no connection saved on watch, the try to go genereal>settings>about scroll down to text data privacy then keep bottom button until reveal hidden menu. Scroll again downward to find OTA package select ota package other then version 2.39.20.

@Dimitrios Kanellopoulos Appreciate your effort to send suunto owners info about updates. Do you have info related issues on race s and possible release fix? Thank you
-
@disadisa I have a brand new race s - a Christmas present - and have spent hours trying to get it to connect to wifi so that I can download maps onto it, using Suunto chat and my own initiative. I’m so, so disappointed and unimpressed. Unless Suunto tell us of a fix soon, I will end up getting a refund and going to Garmin or apple instead.
I tried: soft reset/ hard reset/ uninstalling and reinstalling Suunto app/disconnecting and reconnecting bluetooth on watch and phone/ resetting router…
I am nervous about reverting to old software versions - especially having read other comments in this thread. Suunto need to step up!

@Diana If you need maps and cannot get the wifi set up then downgrade (if the older FW is on your watch) is the solution. If you don;t need maps at this time then no need to set up wifi.
-
@Diana I am on the actual firmware and I can add new networks on IOS. Are you on Android? I just tried and can add wifi networks.
-
@ChrisA @Diana Kindly ask you to upload photo or just write down model number, hw, model, wlan, touch, Bluetooth, ppg and gps version. Reason I ask you for that is to compare watches, because maybe suunto vendor use in production different chip, or hardware components. On that way we will help suunto support to act faster i point to problem. I will upload from my watch bought in Stuttgart shop. Thank you a lot. You can take that photo or check in settings>general>about hw version. wifi status you can find also menu about scroll down to data privacy keep pressed back (lowest bottom) button for a while unitl reveal additional menu and scroll down to wifi status? Once more thank you and that will help me to get final decision to wait or start refund process from suunto.

@Diana said in suunto race s wifi problem after update 2.39.20:
@disadisa I’ve decided to get a refund while I can, so won’t continue this thread. @ChrisA I have apple iPhone 14 Pro - all software up to date. Good luck all!
OK, that is your decision but have you tried the basics:
- Make sure the Wifi is 2.4 GHz
- Do not have special characters in the password
- Was the watch correctly placed in the charger and charging? (this could be tricky sometimes)

@cosme-costa Appreciate your help. Please bear in mind that I explain in topic that I tried all possible and available workaround on manual and net. I am IT expert worked as network and system administrator, Linux environment, python programing as hobbyist and electronic hobbyist . I even try to observe logs in router for DHCP request from watch but none. Suunto model 9 peak and race s has same sw version number update 2.39.20 date from 16.th December. Suunto support announce that they reworked. repack sw version 2.37.34 and named sw 2.39.34 dated 6-th. Jan 2025 to temporary in fact do downgrade on suunto watches to stop people complain. I asked support to do that same with suunto race s, but they answer that is not solution??? It is purely Suunto developer mistake, but I am trying to analyze and help suunto support to overcome this issue. Before I bought suunto I read lot of comments and decide to give a suunto opportunity over garmin.

@disadisa just checked and all the versions are the same as yours! I have no problems downloading maps via Wifi though

@disadisa ah and here the wifi menu (only works on the charger)
