My Suunto Ocean experience so far
-
Hello everyone,
A little over a month ago, I got myself a Suunto Ocean, and overall, it’s been a great experience. I haven’t encountered any bugs, except for the menu hanging for a little bit. I mainly use it for working out, tracking my sleep, and walking some routes. Diving is on the agenda for next month in Costa Rica.
Maps:
The maps have been great! The routes were accurate, and tracking in my city as well as in the “polders” and nature parks was spot on. It’s a bit disappointing that street names aren’t displayed, but it’s not a big deal. Step tracking has improved significantly after the latest updates; before, it would count steps even when I was sitting.Working Out:
For my usage, this feature has been good enough. However, I do miss the ability to log workout sets by exercise type, like you can on a Garmin. I’ve been using my phone to take notes, so it’s manageable. The calorie burn tracking seems fine; I don’t subtract them from my intake anyway, so it works for me. The heart rate tracking has been solid, with only a couple of odd spikes in the past month.Sleeping:
I’ve read that many people experience issues with sleep tracking, such as incorrect start times or missed recordings. However, the Ocean has been reliable for me. It even recorded a nap and correctly classified it (I didn’t even know it could do that), so I’d say it’s been solid in this department.Smartwatch Features:
What really annoyed me is the handling of WhatsApp notifications. If I get a message and close it, the next time messages stack up, it vibrates so much it feels like my arm is experiencing a localized earthquake. Other than that, syncing has worked flawlessly, and the battery has been super reliable. If you have any questions, feel free to ask! I’ll definitely make a guide once I’ve tested the dive features and explored the maps in Costa Rica’s jungles.
