Hiking, navigation details and ETA
-
hello,
1/ first to report what seems a bug.
how to reproduce : at my hike start, I have activated navigation with a route called “25 bosses anti horaire”. During the hike, I display the “details” information which is launched from the MAP screen.
And the route name is displayed in this details screen (see screenshot ).
expected result : the route name is “25 bosses anti-horaire”;
Observed result : the route name is “la Rhune par Olette”, which is one of my saved routes in the watch, but not the one I am currently using!2/ ETA
in the same screen, there is an ETA. I would like to better understand the calculation of the ETA.
I thought the ETA is calculated with the average speed since the start of the activity. So the more it goes, the more the ETA is accurate.
But I observed a lot of variance in the ETA, even after having done more than half of the hike. It seems that the ETA is calculated with the last 10s speed, or something like that. Does anyone know how it is actually calculated?Appart from that, watch is great .
Thanks folks!

it should be something like the last 5 minutes average, if I don’t remember wrong, nevertheless it’s a rather rough estimate since your actual speed depends upon several factors as the terrain slope, for example …

@Gilles-D eta (or any of the estimated navigation values) are for me a bit useless as I have same behavior as you, very wild swings

@Stefano-M64 why isn’t ETA based on average speed? Of course, at start of the hike, ETA would be meaningless, but as more distance of the hike is done, more accurate is the ETA. And with an homogeneous field, after something like 25% of distance made, we would have a good idea of the ETA.

@stromdiddily I observed same erratic behavior with Karoo2 ETA. I wonder why the average speed is not used. There must be a good reason, so if a developer comes around in this discussion, please let us know!

@Gilles-D the average speed isnt a good indication. So far, when i doing a trailrunning race in the Mountains - the actually speed makes sense only, cause If i have the average speed (Uphill Not so fast ) and i run the downhill fast and my watch calculate with the average speed from my climb uphill Tempo… I will be in the finish line before my watch will tell me the finish time i Stay in the finish line while my suunto calculate still 15 minutes to Go

ETA is calculated by your current speed. Assuming that you maintain that speed until the end of the route. It does not take the route ahead into the calculation because of the many unpredictable factors.
