HRV calculation
-
Hello,
A couple of questions related to HRV:
Is the HRV calculation supported on Suunto 9 Baro? If yes:
- Does it leverage HR data from the HR Belt or from the watch PPG sensor?
- How is it calculated? Is it RMS-SD on RR Interval?
- Is HRV used to update automatically intensity zones limits weekly with duration recommendation per zone?
Thanks!

@fof1618 Suunto 9B has no HRV
-
@Egika thx although that’s really surprising considering the model price tag…
-
the S9 Baro has been discontinued by Suunto afaik. Where do you get the price tag from?
I think this model had been introduced 2017 or 2018… -
@Egika I bought in 2022 from Digitec in CH
-
@fof1618 yeah. HRV measurement was introduced I think by end of 2023 to Suunto Vertical.
-
@fof1618 just to complement your original question.
As mentioned already, S9B does not support HRV by itself. Which means, you can’t get HRV from the watch’s built in optical HR sensor.
However, when you use regular Heart Rate belt, which is capable of measuring HRV, then you’ll get the HRV via this HR belt for the activity, where you were using this HR belt. However, watch itself is not displaying, nor processing the HRV during the activity. It only transparently receives what HRV it gets from the belt and store it in the fit file for later processing in the SA or whatever training data analyzer you are using.
So again, whatever the HRV information stored are RMS-SD or RR intrerval, depends on the belt you have used.S9B is a great watch, I am using mine for cca 4 years already. Of course, it does not support all the latest features from Vertical or from Race, but it is solid made and long lasting piece and I am still proud of my Ironman limited edition , which never failed me in any of my ironman races, not even in those eXtreme events which I am big fan of
-
Thx @zadow. I am actually jogging with the original Suunto HR belt.
So in summary:
-
What I understood from @Egika is that HRV was introduced by end of 2023 with recent models. I suppose he refers to the new HRV ZoneSense feature as presented here
-
What @zadow explained is that I could by exporting training data files extract / calculate HRV. Indeed HR RR beats are just a temporal serie from a data stand point. Calculating HRV is just about applying the RMS-SD on this temporal serie.
So since HRV is derived from HR beats variability I don’t understand why is its calculation dependent on the watch model? As a matter of fact it could be supported through one of the many watch Apps or at least on the smartphone App?

@fof1618
What Egika explained to you was that HRV, measured from the watch OHR itself (for any 24/24 measures) was introduced quite recently, and not available for S9 line.
But, RR data, enabling post workout calculations, are available through HR belts since ages. But again, only for workout analysis, not for 24/24. -

Afaik the newer models have a newer HR sensor which is capable of measuring HRV from your wrist at night, so this might be one reason or Suunto wants to push you to invest in a new watch
-
@Mff73 what about the App? Can the App calculate the HRV post exercise and/or post sleep?

Well if I were to buy something else I would probably go for the Morpheus solution.
What I am after is getting my intensity zones updated based on my HRV at rest. Apparently Suunto does not offer this (please correct me if I am wrong). I believe this is more important for me as a sport beginner rather than HRV during exercise.By the way is the Morpheus MR7 HR belt compatible with the Suunto 9 Baro watch?
My plan is to get my HR pulses from the belt while training and still be able to analyse my logs post exercise in the Morpheus App. -

No, HRV need a sensor which is not getting only HR but RR.
And your S9 don’t have this (for its price) -
@fof1618 I use the Morpheus chest strap/sensor. I can easily pair it to my Vertical. There is no integration with the Suunto app at this point. They just released their Garmin integration and they said others would be coming…
Having said that - I am sure you could pair the sensor to your 9Baro I just have no idea if the watch can use the ZoneSense S+ app.
