Suunto Race Crashed again mid ride... š¤®

@Olaf-Gottschalk were you using apps ? Particular settings or sensors ?
(My Sv is not SR but share the same fw, never had a single crash ; 663 activities since may 2023).
-
@vjakub while I was riding or maybe during an Auto Pause - I did not notice until 20km after it stopped recording. I just saw that the Race just showed the watch face and was not recording anymore.

I use sensors, but no apps.
Sensors, of course, are a core part of recording sports activitiesā¦
HR and power meter. -

Iāve had crashes with an older firmware back in November before, but since then gladly nothing crashed.
But the problem is: just a single crash destroys the faith you have in a product as a user. If it wasnāt for my Wahoo which records the same activity on bikes, I would have lost my recordingā¦
I would not want to try to record a Marathon race and have it crashā¦ -
My Race crashed during a run a couple of days before (third time since the beginning).
The day before, I had a message on my Polar V3 indicating that the H10 battery should be replaced.
I ignored the message because I had to buy a new battery.
One day later the Race crashed while using the paired H10.
And one day later, the H10 battery was completely empty.
Strange coĆÆncidence but Iām sure it is linked.
All my crashes happened when linked to an external sensor.
Suunto has still work to do with the integration of external Bluetooth sensors.
No way to have battery alerts with these devices. Does it exist with the Suunto smart ?
Despite all the negative reviews, the Polar V3 only crashed once with data loss. It was with the very first firmware. -
@Raphes67 My old Ambit 3 used to alert me to a low battery in my Suunto HR belt so they have done it in the past, no idea if its a feature on the race though as I put a new battery in the HR belt sensor the day I got my race back in January so assume itās still going strongā¦

@Mattg576
Thanks for your answer.
I just saw in the Suunto smart HR manual that the device has got a memory function that buffers data when the signal between the belt and the watch is lost. Nice.
Maybe this kind of algorithm donāt work with other hr belts and maybe this can cause crashes on the watch.
Just a supposition -
@Mattg576 that would be nice to see the battery level from the belt!!! Suunto PLEASE do this
-
The battery level of the āSmartā HR sensor has been discussed/requested before, see https://forum.suunto.com/search?term=Smart+sensor+battery&in=titles ā the threads contain info on 3rd party apps that allow to query the battery level, to offer you a workaroundā¦ I would also like to see that the watch tells me that the battery is low like Polar seems to do. Or at least SA should show the battery level like Polar Beat does.
-
@Raphes67 thanks for your input, but in my case I can confirm my Polar battery is up und good both according to the Beat App (which I use to check the batteryā¦sigh) and also because I recently exchanged it.
So, no, my crash had no relation at least to the Polar. The power meter battery is good according to the SRAM App.
-
@Raphes67 another thing about Polarā¦
I came to Suunto from a Polar Grit X Pro which started crashing on a very, very regular basis after a firmware update in June 2022. It crashed like around once every two weeks to once a week on my bike ridesā¦Thatās my Polar story. They never cared. I had the watch replaced, yes, but that did not help.
Then the V3 came out and all (!) reviewers on YouTube had exactly my problem on the new device. Mid activity, suddenly the screen blanks, the Polar logo pops up and thatās it. No recording leftā¦
So, this was my confirmation: it was not me. Polar does not have a firmware that is crash protected.
Wahoo on the other hand also did crash very few times, but they instantly restore the current activity and go on recording. You lose at most the time frame of the reboot.
This is how it should be done everywhere if developers cannot guarantee non crashing firmware.Suunto is -sadly- in-between. It crashes, the activity seems to survive until that point. But if you do not notice the reboot, like I did not, bad luckā¦ No automatic continuation and definitely a second activity which is already bad for Suunto when posted on social media like Strava: āmy workout part 1ā, āmy workout part 2āā¦ š„¹
