Race S vs Vertical
-
End of first charge of my SRs. I’ve been wearing it non stop since I’ve received it last Monday.
5 full days of H24 hr tracking, sleep tracking on, spo2 off, notifications off, backlight low, turn to raise low. No « always on » display used on exercice. No belt for exercice, wanted to fully try ohr.
12 exercices, a bit more than 12 hours of exercices recorded.
Ohr is now very reliable on me, even if it’s not perfect. It’s now perfectly usable including for cycling.
I still had 10% batterie when I plugged it for charge.
15min later it was a 75% ! [edit : it was full in 35/40 minutes top]
I don’t change my previous feedback : very impressive small watch, awesome display (sharpness for maps is « wow » !!). -
@Tieutieu I noticed this as well! The Race S charges incredibly fast, even faster than the 9PP in my opinion.

Today I did the first longer trailrunning activity with the Race S. The digital crown on my device is pretty awful, but I wanted to give it a last chance before returning the watch (and immediately getting a new one )
All in all the GNSS performance is rock solid. There was a lot of dense tree cover but the track looks super smooth and the displayed instant pace (and therefore also power) is perfectly useable like on the Vertical. On two other runs the Race S produced exactly the same track as the Vertical. Note: I compared runs on different days, so that’s not very scientific
Today is a very sunny and hot day where I live. Even in direct sunlight AMOLED was perfectly readable. In the forrest (shadows) I find the readability of the AMOLED screen even better than on the Vertical.
Vibrations of the watch are very good in my opinion and the speaker has a good volume.
Have I said how comfortable it is? You barely feel it on the wrist.
I followed a route without turn by turn instructions, had AOD on (medium brightness), no smartphone notifications, watch was connected to a Coros HRM and I had the map screen on most of the time. I started with 79% battery and finished at 56% after 2 hours and 55 minutes. That’s about 7,5% battery drain per hour. So for extra long activities you really have to think about the battery drain and device settings. That’s something I could always completely ignore with the Vertical.
Overall the watch is a joy to use. Only for longer activities I will still rely on the Vertical.
Out of the box the strap feels a little bit stiffer than the older ones (Athletic 5). But a few days later it already softened a bit, and now it’s really comfortable.
Unfortunately the watch restarted itself after about 2 hours (I’ve sent logs). And the digital crown on my device is completely unusable while running. With sweaty fingers it’s simply impossible to make it rotate with one finger. Even with two fingers it’s hard. I have already printed the return label and ordered a new one. Fingers crossed the next one does not have this issue.
EDIT: The Race S charges really fast, like @Tieutieu already said.

Did you bet green light from support to change it? Will you get the replacement „only“ after sending back your watch?
Please tell us if the crown of the new watch is better. Mine feels a bit rough as well. Thank you

First hours the crown of my SRs was a bit « stiff » but now it works smoothly.

Thank you for the insights. Considering you had AOD on, it’s not that bad.

@Stoke80 It will not be replaced. I return the watch, get my money back and order a new one. I haven’t waited for the money, I have already ordered a new one. I am pretty sure this watch will be on sale again, but with a new digital crown.

Complementary feedback of my SRs : after first full charge battery drains way faster. Strange, I didn’t changed any settings. Let’s see how it evolves.

Some feedback regarding the SRs that my wife is testing since one week ago to check if it would be a good replacement for her Fenix 6s pro:
-
AOD: Off
-
Sleep track: Off (she does not care about that metric)
-
24/7 HR: Off (she does not care about that metric)
-
Mobile notifications: Off (she does not care about that info)
-
Average battery consumption per hour of GPS: 3%-4% (The Fenix 6s pro consumes 10% per hour)
-
Battery consumption in 7 days (4h running with GPS + 1h strength workout no GPS) : 50%
Obviously she decided to sell the Fenix 6s Pro and keep the Suunto.

@Stoke80 I have just received the new watch. It’s a difference like day and night. The crown on the new watch does not feel at all “stiff” and can be easily rotated with one finger, just like it’s supposed to be. Now I am really happy with my purchasement
-
Thank you for the info. How easy does it feel now? I am somewhat undecided if mine is really „bad“.
I don‘t have that noise you had. But I really need to put pressure from the top on the crown to rotate it. Or I need to take two fingers so that the watch does not move on the wrist. -
@Stoke80 It’s hard to describe. It rotates smoothly and easily with one finger. I can scroll through the widgets even easier and faster than on the normal Race (faster because the crown is smaller). And I don’t need any pressure, I just put the finger gently on the crown and move the finger. At the same time it’s very precise. Also sweaty hands make no difference. There is a little resistance, so that the crown doesn’t move by itself. But it feels very well balanced.
You could contact support and ask what to do. I highly doubt it, that Suunto designed this watch in a way, that a user would need two fingers to operate the digital crown. I would ask for a replacement, refund or repair, if you are not satisfied.

Thank you. Will contact support.

Hello
For my part I have had the vertical for a year and I am very happy with it but seeing the arrival of the race and race s watches I ask myself a question:
Does anyone know why the sleep monitoring is different between the vertical and race/race s. And will the sleep phases ever be available on the vertical
Thanks -
-
I just received my vertical from support (repair was very fast - send Monday, repaired Thursday, send back Friday ! ). Now I’ll have to deal between SRs and my vertical. I’ll probably use the race S most of the time for sleep tracking (I love the sleep phases tracking and its small size), and for small races or training when I don’t want to use hr belt…but the Vertical remains my dream watch. It’s just awesomely good looking and with so huge battery life ! But SRs really rocks ! If next top of the line gen of watch brings amoled screen with vertical battery life, it will be mine for sure !

I quote myself to mention that my wife charged the Race S yesterday with 23% (today she had to do her long run of the week) after 10 days… very very good.

By the way : is there a chance that sleep phases and nap finally arrive on SV ?

Hi, I’ve read this post and it seems that everyone is talking mostly about hardware. I’m trying to decide between the 2 watches but have a few software-ish wondering-ments, perhaps someone would know? The most important one is:
Does the Race S have light/dark maps like the Race some time ago, or outdoor/high contrast/dark like the Vertical? I really like the outdoor and high contrast ones on vertical and would be disappointed if they aren’t available on the Race S.
Are the any other important software differences between the two? I only know for a fact that Race S does not have an option to set a custom battery mode, like the Vertical, but maybe there are more?
Btw, based on your, Race S users, experience, do you think the Race S’s battery would last enough for 15h training with best accuracy with navigation the whole time, notifications (and connection to the phone, if possible) turned off, AOD on, heart rate on?
