Turn by turn notifications not working on imported tracks
-
Just to confirm that TBT notifications seem ok when one way track is used (you are not repeating parts or you are not returning the same track you have gone). So if the track is not modified after the Komoot step, TBT on imported tracks seems to work but only in that case.
I need to check with real navigation yet.

@dreamer_ I’ve never had an issue with routes that overlap/repeat and TBT. I just ran a lollipop type route today and had correct turn notifications both out and back across the same trail. This was from a route created in SA. However, I have also never had an issue with overlapping routes created in Komoot and pushed to Suunto.
One issue that can arise, however, is when navigating a route in reverse, the TBT notifications do not reverse directions. So it’ll say turn left when you need to turn right. I assume this is because the turn notifications are actually just baked-in waypoints and cannot be changed.
I’ll restate my assumption that your issue is in using GPX files that were not created using a mapping service. For instance, the UTMB GPX you mentioned above does not exactly follow the mapped trails as laid out in SA or Komoot or other services (which is just OpenStreetMap data). It’s just a connection of points overlayed on the map, so Suunto or Komoot can’t create TBT directions.
If, instead, you create a route using a mapping application by selecting points on a map, the application must do some calculation to get you from A to B using the underlying trail info. And this is when the TBT info is added.
Now, other companies may handle things differently. Garmin, for instance, can do route calculation on the watch itself (model dependent), so turn notifications are created on the fly. However, Garmin was notorious for creating far too many upcoming turn alerts, often giving turn alerts for simple bends in the path when no intersection was present.
The real, REAL issue with Suunto TBT is the timing of the notifications. As it is, the next turn is announced when you are just approaching or at the current turn, which is silly. The current turn should be announced at the current turn. Because, duh.

A hundred and one percent agree!

@duffman19 I understand and your answer is pretty solid in fact but the thing is that gpx files imported on other watches seem to have TBT notifications on routes provided from different races. So I also think there’s work to be done here.
To be fair, I also think that even Garmin needs to improve the TBT notifications. In fact, I also remember having notifications in the simple bends you are talking about and where there weren’t intersections at all.
And I completely agree about that issue with the timing of the notifications. Even if the notifications are ok It does not make sense to have a notification of the next turn and not a bit before of the current one.
That next turn can be at 2 kilometers and you were notified a lot ago. You are not going to know where is that turn, and what is worse you are going to be notified of a next turn that you need to remember later. It does not make sense at all.
But it does also not make sense to cover the whole screen with the notification because during that time you don’t see the map because just that notification. That notification should be a minimal part in the map like in other watches.

@dreamer_
maybe you can try this very hidden feature/bug https://forum.suunto.com/post/145471 and if it is really working as described (i have not tested) it might be really cool to “keep it” -
@Mff73 thanks for that thread! Very interesting idea in fact (I’m the new one here yet )

I believe they improved this in the latest firmware (or so I heard).

Yes, the Garmin TBT is much improved recently. No more random turn notifications. They’ve also added voice alerts (“Left turn in 180 feet,” etc.) when connected to phone or BT headphones. However, this feature is now very buggy as nobody can figure out how to turn it off!
Sooo… navigation improvements are coming to Suunto?? Very exciting! But, I’m trying not to get my hopes too high. Does Christmas mean 25 June? I suppose that would be appropriate.

@isazi the toggle works fine it the original track had TbyT. As soon as I import a file I toggle it is as I find the TbyT annoying.
So please don’t ask to remove it

Amazfit has added TBT notifications for the Ultra. I don’t know how they do work, if notifications are working on imported routes, if there are bugs or not or if they even work at all.
But the following capture shows the notification without covering the map and the remaining distance for the turn with while seeing the map until you take the turn (that distance is lowering while you are moving and arriving), which is in fact a very good desing:

@dreamer_
we have been said that ALL our dreams will come true with Suunto in the next FW ️ -
@Mff73 not all, but there will be a new feature in the map screen.

@Mff73 something like this maybe yes. Not ALL…

@Josaiplu TBT notifications seems to work on Strava routes in Coros https://www.dcrainmaker.com/2024/04/coros-vertix2s-in-depth-review-tested.html . Since Komoot seems to change the tracks, have you tried further with Strava?
-
@dreamer_ it does not work on my race with strava routes unfortunately

I have found this Coros resource:
https://support.coros.com/hc/en-us/articles/4407033997588-How-to-add-turn-by-turn-directions-on-a-GPX-fileIt is interesting because they are using the site plotaroute.com to add the TBT directions on a gpx file. I’ll test it (but not on this weekend). So just posting it to see if anyone is interested in a try if it works instead of using the Komoot way.
As far as I know, TBT is not working on Coros either without modifying the gpx. But according to that DCR link I was posting, TBT notifications seem to work for Strava imported routes.Here is a very small video of the new TBT notifications for Amazfit too: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=061_eeClXeY
TBT notifications are there once imported the GPX file. I don’t know if they modified the file or if it’s working by default. The T-Rex Ultra is not a very sold watch, like it was the T-Rex 2 (which does not have that TBT notifications update). So there’s very little info about those TBT notifications and how they do work.
